Gulliver a revy is a cap!

Is it just me?

Charlie,yes I KNOW it's a bluddy cap,but what's the derivation of the word 'REVY?'
For those who don't understand,derivation means ' the origin of the word 'revy' ,i.e. what word does it come from originally,is it Australian slang etc.?
That is what I am asking!
Why do you call it a 'revy',and don't say because that's what we've always called it !

Charlie,here's an aside,when I worked in the bus industry there was one driver on the team who was called Charlie Farley.Well,that's what we called him.His real name was Charlie Hughes or something,but everyone,even his passengers called him Charlie Farley. I even used to forget and regularly put his name down as FARLEY,Charlie on schedules,rotas etc,and no-one batted an eyelid,especially him.He was always Charlie Farley.

Perhaps we should call you Charlie Revy from now on.?

I read that participating in a daily blog can help stave off symptoms of dementia,but I think in my case I might already have it,in fact I've been like this for over 50 years now,in fact it was just perfect for a career at sea I believe! I'm sure I'm not alone on here somehow......

A couple of times I came across guys making a revy with about 8 panels something like the longshore mans leather cap.

Hi Charlie.
All the time I was at sea I never bought a revy or a pair of shorts, an old AB on my first ship showed me how to make them, mainly with some old duck canvas,

Des,Perhaps it's just as well,because there must have been many shop staff,who when asked for a 'revy',would either tell you what you can go and do,or look ever so blank and say " Yer Wh-a-a-t ?!, or what the hell is that?"

And anyway where would you buy it- a Revy Shop,or Revy's -4 U?

" What on earth's a revy dear,and why would you want one of them?"
"Its a cap dear,to keep the burning sun off my shiny sun-tanned pate".

Its the covering for the Torricilium vacuum which nobody answered either. A revy goes back to the French Revolution, so could be put on backwards so that when scarpering the enemy thought you were advancing. Whats a Torricium vacuum after you take the revy off it.? JS PS A revy is a pirate. Or some may say a member of the Revolutionary Guard, whence the saying a good revy is a dead revy, and keep them wheels aturning turning Hi ho. JS
