In the smaller places even here in Blackheath,the Doctors are so much Friendlier,give more time to one too!
Don't know your circumstances Des,but I don't pay anything no matter what!
Specialists included!
All I have to do is get a referral letter to whichever Specialist I see!

Great System here have had Heart Surgery,and lots of other minor things but have not paid one single cent!

John, There is no doubt that austerity over the last 3yrs or so have tightened the reins on the N.H.S. Along with your GP. Because they have had that much work load put on them they are like social workers and more and more are leaving the profession. And who can blame them. That's no comfort to the likes of any of us who depend on it. Two cases exactly the same within the last few months one my Mother in Law late 80s Another relative early 80s After being assessed in Fazak hospital it has been a nightmare to get funding for them to go into care. My own G.P. Has started taking your mobile number and when you ring for an appointment for one of the doctors emergency or not they will text you or ring you when the next available appointment comes up. This applies to everyone young and old. And I am not banging any political drum John but if these tory,s get another term in office they have warned there is more austerity on the way. You and most on this site are surplus to requirement mate. If you reach 65yrs old in this country you become a burden on the state. That's the way this country has gone and it will get worse before if at al it gets better. Regards John good health mate Terry.

#####rigger just wonder what you would opt out for.......would you not think any doctor couldget your medical status at once would not be beneficial....say you were not at home or on holiday etc ...regards cappy

Reading these posts and watching tv give me the idea that UK is still in the middle ages in certain respects.
Having lived in spain for 15 years and taken residency I have the impression that the NHS has a lot to learn.
I have a medical card and when I need a prescription I ring a number(I have no idea where its located)and give them my medical number and they can tell me what health centre I use and my doctors name.Having established that the information is correct they make an appointment for me and it is usually no more than a week ahead for prescriptions.
At the health centre the appointments are always on time(I don't think I have ever had to wait more than 10 mins after the appointed time)
On seeing the dr she takes my card and puts it into the computer and loads 6 months prescription and that's it.
When I need medication I go to the pharmacy ,he puts my card into his terminal and tells me what the prescription is and if the card is in need of reloading.
As a matter of interest I was talking to a pharmacist in Manchester more than 10 years ago and he told me that the same system was being worked on in the uk.
Incedently the health centre has at least 25 consulting rooms plus x-ray dental and physio there is also an A&E adjoining including an ambulance service
A point of interest on the subject of care in the community.I was watching Japanese tv(in English) and they described a system in use in a particular town that has a monitor on the water system of old people living alone.The system is set up with a telephone link so that any change in routine(i.e no use of water for toilet or washing) will set an alarm of at a centre and they dispatch a carer to check up

The BIG problem with the UK is, we do Not have any intelligent Pollies, of any kind. Doesn't matter which party is in, they are all Bent and Corrupt.
I wonder how many of our Pollies use the NHS,
how many times would you see any one of them sat in a queue in A&E, ?
Or lying in the next bed in a full ward of patients including a load of residents of the Khyber crapping all over the bathroom.
What Politician of any breed knows anything about Medicine? NONE.
Why do we elect politicians, when we Know, before they start, of any Party, that they are going to Rip Us off.
There has to be a better system than a Political Health Service.

what happens when you do not have a mobile phone, I do not have one, never had one, and do not want one.
If I had one I have almost No one to phone, most of my mates are dead.

i think i have a season ticket to my hospital. quite a few of the nurses and docs know me by name and i get smiles from most. its a good hospital and i am usually on my way home before my appointment time. some dept's have queue's but most don't. have been in a few wards, for a few days and i find that the Filipino auxiliaries are very good and very patient. with regard to doctors and surgeries i don't worry which doctor i see as i usually know what the trouble is and only need them for confirmation or a referral. the pharmacy delivers my prescriptions which they have repeats for from the doctor.

Re JS's comment on Japanese health monitoring(#27), i read recently that there is a system available that analyses urine and stools in the lavatory pan and these are sent to your health clinic electronically for further examination if anything untoward is discovered. The 'depositer' would then be called in for further tests. This facility, would really only be available to the more well off Japanese I would imagine.
