It is almost one year since I was diognosed and operated on for Prostate Cancer. My condition now is cured, but not like a ham I hope.


My brother, some dozen or so years younger than I, has been diognosed with the same condition though not as serious as mine was. I had Gleeson 9 he has only a 7. Last week I attended with him at his review with the consultant. He will be operated on the first week in February at the same hospital as I. Last year it had only been open for six weeks when I attended so the 'Plumber' did open cut mining on me. Since then they have installed a machine so my brother will have a 'Locksmith' do keyhole surgery on him.


During the review the consultant was extremely interested in our relationship, brothers with different surnames! Mother had married twice so two different fathers. My brother was convinced he had contracted the Cancer from his dad who had died of Colon Cancer, but no!

The consultant asked about mum and there in lies the key, she had died of complications from Breast cancer.

He then went on to explain to us the findings of many medical specialists globaly over the past five years.

There is a direct link between Breast and Prostate Cancer, if your mother had Breast Cancer there is a 75% to 80% chance you will contract Prostate Cancer. Testosterone gene is the commion link.

My brother has two daughters by his second marriage, though seperated from his wife, the consultant has informed him that once they turn 18 the hospital will arrange test to see if they carry the gene.

My reason for posting this?
If by doing so any member can use the information to assist a friend or family member with this issue then it will have been worth while.

I had prostate cancer at 59 ,now 75 so it looks like Ive beat it , had a radical prostectomy a long incision belly button to crotch .after the op the doc said He would send me for radiation treatment ,after listening to the radiologists break down of what I could expect of the treatment, fusing of the bowel and incontinence and bleeding for up to 2 years /I went back too my Doc and asked him what was the chance of the cancer coming back ,he said about %15 so I gave that up ,and took my chances . I think the Doc was not happy as he would have had me on the hook for 2 years and a huge hospital bill .greedy barsteward they are you have to be very carefull over here ,$$$$$

That's great news John. Last Thursday I got got a provisional all clear at Cancer Care and just need to send 2 blood test over the next year and if OK when the doc sees me then he will pronounce me clear.

Neville, your decision turned out to be a good one. My worst trouble was radiation damage to my lower bowel, two years ago fourteen satchels of blood over a month before the leak was found and cauterized just in time. the same doc said that his experience was that bleeding usually clears up in four years. I hope he is right, I was zapped four years ago.

in 61 i was diegnoiced with bllader cancer after passing blood in hostpital counsulton said to me you have a 60 pecent chane of being alive in 5 years i said that dose not soud to bad he said i can put it another way you have a 40 percnt chance of being dead he said ican talk to you like this because you have a great sence of humour 10 in house opperattions 16 one hour s of chemo 3 years iwas at it never gave up had possivet mind just get onwith it last time in blackpool victoria mr rothwell mr consoltant said i have gohne as far as icn with you if it comes back iwill rmove your bllader and you will have a bag for life went home got a leeter got the resutl from the path lab no sighn of your residuil tumour go now once ayear for camera up the pipe when i go they say one off our survers just like to say it can be beatnan

Excellent news John. Unfortunately mine is not getting any better, in fact worsening. PSA is doubling every visit and they are at a loss as to why. In for another bone scan on Wednesday to see if it is back in the bones. Fingers crossed obviously. Feckn sucks!
