Hi Richard Did my first trip 1962 on the Denby Grange and she was a Tanker for Houlder Bros. Early 60s Hadly's i think had three Tankers CORATO Built 1952 Sold 1962, CERINTHUS Built 1954 demolished 1976, CLYMENE Built 1961 demolished 1976. Cerinthus and Clymene were demolished within a month of each other even though Clymene was seven years younger.

I am sure I have seen these vessels, did they have a very prominent yellow funnel?

Yes they had a yellow funnel black top with HSC in a white diamond.

Seen them in various places, one of them looked like a Shell H boat, if I recall correctly.

Cerinthus was one of three H boats being built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast they were Harpa, Harvella and Hadley's had the third on life long charter to Shell.

Oooops, sorry, It was the Hornby Grange that was in Curacao, and not the Denby Grange, which was of course a tanker!! Memory, aint so good nowadays, 59 years after the event. Someone pass me the Phylosan, please

I remember loading aviation spirit in Curaçao for Yokahama after arriving in ballast from Falmouth in 1960.
We had 24 hrs dry dock in Falmouth for bottom scrape .Myself and 1st and 2nd mate hired taxi and managed to visit most of the pubs there in one night. I was 3rd mate on MV Blyth Adventurer (Moller Line UK ltd)

Memories do tend to get a bit muddled but I can still recall the smell of Curacao and now and then a whiff will bring back times past.

Terry, Aaaahhhh, the smell of Curacao!! Forget the smell of Bisto, give me the smell of Curacao anytime. l also have no difficulty in conjuring up that unforgettable smell, but alas those days have long gone, together with the massive Shell refinery, now a mere skeleton of bygone days. Of course in the 60,s, at least in my time, in and out of Curacao, was literally in-and-out, often within a 24hour period, whether it was discharging freshwater for Curacaos industrial use, picked up in one of the Lakes transiting the Panama Canal, or a full cargo of crude from Lake Maracaibo, Any time ashore in Curacao was certainly out of the question for the apprentices who were fully occupied, together the the Pumpman, in loading or discharging,each time trying to better our previous turnaround times, which was often disrupted owing to problems ashore,or more likely problems with our pumps ,if we were discharging. but on the whole things went pretty smoothly.Certainly no time for a visit to Happy Valley. During our 12 months voyage, we had 2 separate "Lake Runs " of a month each between Lake Maracaibo and Curacao, which were a bit monotonous for all, but on paying-off, all on board received a" Lake Run Bonus", which for us apprentices ran into shillings rather than pounds! During the 80,s and 90,s l was fortunate enough to re-visit Curacao as a tourist on 5 occasions, but the magic of the 60,s had by that time already disappeared. RICHARD

James, Wow! You must have had some really clean tanks on Blyth Adventurer for Shell to allow you to carry aviation spirit! The cleanest cargo we ever loaded in Curacao was a load of Gas oil for the Chilean Navy in Talcahuano, Chile., and that was only after a second cleaning of our tanks prior to loading. Shell. understandably, were very strict about the cleanliness of the tanks, which on ships such as the "Cerinthus", which had been primarily used to carrying really thick grades of crude from Venezuala to Curacao for refining, did pose some problems at times. Richard i am not sure if this was the same trip that you were on, but a mate of mine did 12 months on the Cerinthus and in his discharge book for Voyage Dis he had Around the World, have never seen that before.
