    Hi Ken
Yes i feel that this is a good thread if i may say so myself! LOL
I do hope that there will be lots more joining in over the coming times,as it opens up the lives of us ex Seaman and shows that besides the Sea we were able to adjust to almost anything n our days.
I myself as seen have had a very very Topsy Turvy time in my life, but to say that i have not enjoyed it all would be a lie.
There were ups and downs but all together it was most certainly much more Ups!
As said would not change my life experiences for Quids! Only possibly stayed at Sea a little longer! But them were the breaks i got and i took then all with open Arms !

So come on ALL you Lads and Lasses out there please do join in here and let us know what you did besides going to Sea!

Look forward to reading more interesting posts on this Topic!
    Cheers

Looking back in the years just after the war we all did jobs that today would not be allowed in many parts of society.
Mucking out and feeding Pigs at the age of 8 is not something town people would be expected to do today.
Delivering news papers at the age of 10 riding a bicycle without a helmet, OMG are you mad they would now say.
Leaving home at 16 to go to sea, what sort of person does that, you should be considering University for your future education.

Well yes maybe, but in those days the opportunity to do so was not there.
We lived on what we could, lived where we could with so many properties damaged by the war.

But at the end of it all we became what we are today, resourceful useful members of society, members capable of turning a hand to almost any thing we choose.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Irrespective of what we all did after our time at sea, I think it’d be safe to say that most, if not all of us remember that period as the best time of our lives. What can be disheartening at times is that when we tell our tales of back then to today’s younger generation, not only are they completely disinterested but they cannot even begin to imagine what we’re talking about and think that we’re making it up. At least this site keeps us all on the same wavelength so to speak. I’m somewhat amused that hearing a crew members story of a particular incident or place, reminds you of a similar, if not identical experience in the same port, bar, ship or messroom.
Thank goodness a few of us have recorded our experiences in writing.

Duke, never a truer word spoken. We know what we did, where and when, but you are correct attempting to explain to some shore siders is never easy.
