17-22 Radio Officer, MN. A great training for what was to come.
Then Commercial TV studios and facilities companies doing vision engineering and editing, finishing with Yorkshire TV as technical supervisor studios.
At 52 left TV and have done ok working for self as an enamel artist and author. But I do miss the sea!
How times change things,that was a lovely little Hotel with first class Service, we as Waiters tended to put as much pride in our Service as possible, and always well attired .
Then had many a good Night on Capstan Hill with the then Girlfriend,overlooking that lovely Bay!

from the age of 12 I worked between school holidays on demolition soon picket up the burning gear at 15 driving a front loader loading hardcore plenty of money then as soon as I could get into the merchant navy that was me skint but loved the sea after a couple of trips was offered college free by blue funnel but the same day as offered I had to come ashore I found that my dad was terminally ill but I have work on the water many times with flouting cranes and my steering ticket came in handy on a few jobs 2 days after leaving the sea my wages went up from 26.oo a month to 180.00 per weak and that was in 69 I promised my dad on the day he died I would always look after mam she lived into her 80s I did my duty and very confident I would have made a good captain. what did a captains wages in 69 lads and I was only 19 at the time answers please. jp

Vernon, it hopefully will be of interest to future younger generations to see just what we had to do in our time.
Many of the younger ones do not see working for a living as being of importance, they believe that some how they will be supported by some other means.
I was an apprentice Engineer with De Havilands sacked, then in a cotton mill until the Vindi. after ten years got married came ashore, Steel Erector then in a Steel works. then sacked, building sites digging holes, sacked for burying the Foreman down a hole, In a Plastics factory, then a Gas board salesman, KNOCKING ON DOORS, "GOOD MORNING MRS, I HAVE COME TO GET YOU IN DEBT, THEN a Biscuit Sales man, then a Paint and wall paper sales rep,
Then went back to sea. till retirement. Then bouight a Flower Shop for Anne and then I became a roughy toughy Flower sales man. and helpijng out in the Funeral Parlour nexr door

my future ashore was to be a Labourer in and out of work No future in that,Best move I ever made was to go back to sea. That's where I belonged.

Interesting revival Doc:-
Worked on a farm when not at school left school at 15 started work as an apprentice mason it didn't last long, was young and wild wanted to go to sea!
Joined the Fred Everard right before Xmas as a cabin boy, next came deck boy Foxfield Liverpool, Thomas M Metcalfes Jos, M.v Kinderence L&R.
Wanted to be a ships engineer so got an apprenticeship at Edbros Bolton as apprentice fitter/welder served apprenticeship
Had to do compensatory workshop service ( Examiner of engineers L'POOL)
Worked for Fletcher plant Bolton as a Maintenance Fitter.
Worked as a plant fitter for Euclid heavy earthmoving.
Joined B.P. as a junior engineer did eight trips with them before going ashore.
Worked as a service engineer on heavy earth moving equipment for large international.
Started own business in heavy plant repairs/hire and specialised in diesel injection equipment/engine repairs.
Back at sea on suction dredgers.
Works Engineer for large major international
Team Lead at large acute hospital
Engineer in medical gas systems working at some 50 hospitals until retirement at 68.
Nowhere near as many as some, but the best years were those spent at sea :)
