Same thing could be seen in Moscow for their Victory day Parade. At least the UK one was more about remembrance were as the Russians Tanks, Missile carriers and other military hardware on show. Meanwhile Russia still killing innocent civillians in Ukranie. If it had not been for the Russian Convoys the and the sacrifice made by thousands of Seamen Russia may well not have had the tools to do the job.

The history of WW2 for the people of UK is still strong i many minds, one hops that this continues even when all of that era are gone.
To forget would destroy all the good done by those brave souls who gave the ultimate so we who remained benefit from their actions.

Parades such as VE day help to keep that most important memory alive, long may it remain so.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Yes the Prime Minister paid homage to all the brave souls and thanked them for service, whilst at the same time taking away their winter fuel allowance, hypocritical barsteward!

While we should never forget those who fought and died for our freedom the buildup leading to VE Day & VJ day is becoming more and more commercialised. Getting to be the same as Easter and Christmas.

The Royal British Legion is a business now last salary details I can find for the CEO £150/160 thousand a year plus Pension perks that Salary is for the year 2020, I am sure it will have increased over the last 5 years as well.

The RBL tried to block the Merchant Navy from the service of Remembrance in 2015, it was only down to the fact that the them PM Cameron told them the MN Vets had to be included.

I still buy my poppy and wear it with pride. The RBL is like the RNLI, just another business coining it in and paying the CEO mega bucks.

Had many a fight with the RBL about including the Red Ensign at Remembrance Services and won. Way back (1956) I happened to be on leave at the same time as my father and he (ex MN- military and again MN) said lets go to the RBL for a drink, they said he could go in but I couldn't, I had just come back from the Suez invasion. He never set foot in another RBL

I stopped giving money to the RNLI when they started giving funds to Chad to teach women how to swim in bhurkas, and further compounded it by using RNLI vessels as cross channel (one way) ferries for 'irregular' immigrants as they are now called in Govt circles and notices.

Any spare money I have goes to Air Ambulance, from my days in Chad I don't remember a coastline, but then again I am a doddery old fool

Here in Oz our most sacred day is Anzac Day April 25.
Thousands turn out at dawn at many locations across the nation,
Noticed at our local one the number of young children there, and number of schools laying wreaths, looks good for the future
    Happy daze John in Oz.

I have two minds on the subject as the same as a lot on this site underwent the war years as a youth. Once a year Rememberance may not do any damage to young fertile minds as long as the services are devoted fully to the abhorrence of such slaughter of human beings .Those shown movies glorifying war I certainly have my doubts. The propoganda put out in the newspapers during the last WW 2 with cartoons showing all Japanese troops and mocking them as being at most 5 feet tall ,bandy legged ,and short sighted wearing thick lensed glasses , carrying a rifle and bayonet. With a baby stuck on the end of the bayonet , didn’t do much for my sleeping patterns during the war, especially during a German air raid who were their best friends, and we were born into it. Today’s youngsters watch all similar things on their computers and tvs , but not the real thing in smoke and flesh and smell, , have they got the intelligence to realize the futility of war ? You can’t keep it from them but some of the actual sights should they be censored for their eyes ? JS.

I've a humble opinion to express though I doubt it carries any weight given the number of honours that have been dished out simply because this person or that person has done his job for x number of years. Hardly outstanding. My opinion is that we, as a nation and people, are obsessed with celebrity - just look at the number of so-called influencers; and they get paid for it! My father wouldnot have believed it!

The authorities have lost control of the Media. They do what they want say what they want even though they know it is all lies, that is according to Trump, maybe he has a point.
When you get so called influencers telling people the best way to commit suicide or how to download plans to build a bomb. We live in a sick world.
Mobile phones should be that a PHONE not a hand held computer, just a phone with a video link so you can see friends and family.
    Big business calling the shots.

#38 Then you don’t agree with the armed forces receiving service medals for service then Tony , think the RN one is every 10 years and used to be referred to as 10 years of undiscovered crime. It does among servicemen themselves make it known to them how long a person has been in the mob. And is usually worn with pride at ceremony’s.I have received 3 times by the Australian authority’s and represents 45 years service and this is on the strength of my discharge book. At least at a cenotaph service people will know I was MN.Reading some of the stories on here about the Russian Convoys during the war it took the Russians to shame the British government into recognising those men on those merchant ships just doing their jobs ?
