Maybe let them think that there is also a plug hole on the stern of the ship. Reason being that one can drain water out of a boat by just taking the plug out of the stern and inserting a rod while powering along. Physics takes over as the force of the water outside pulls any water in the boat out. Can just imagine most of those reporters falling for that one.
Les There was a special nozzle carried on a ship which could pump out smaller amounts of water than the portable pump. This nozzles name can’t remember at moment , but will come back hopefully it had another lead off which dropped in the water to be pumped out and the other part of the nozzle was attached to a hose connected to the deck SW line and pointed overboard and the pull of water as you say dragged the water out of where it shouldn’t be. It was part of a ships BOT equipment at one time. Its name is on the tip of my tongue so hope I don’t swallow it. Cheers JS. Think its name began with an S…..

This is an eductor , i was on a ships with them as engine room bilge pumps, they worked well as long as you had good water pressure, with no moving parts they were trouble free. These eductors were also used for pulling a vacuum in
the steam condenser.
The only sea cocks I ever saw at sea where the ones in the lifeboats, but we called them plugs.

Think an Eductor was part of the safety equipment of certain vessels of a certain tonnage for the deck ? I’m going back now to 1957 when was third mate and in charge of all the LSA equipment., That’s nearly 68 years ago with the leap years counted. Cheers JS

Thye often refere to the bow as the sharp end, who knows what they call the stern.
