Flooded house

After Tuesday's torrential rain we have been flooded. This was Tuesday night when the water came into the house only a couple of inches but enough to ruin the flooring and some pieces of furniture, couple of electrical items. Insurance guy came Thursday he was excellent, told us how things would be and didn't quibble about anything, restoration guy came Friday and went through the house pointing out things we hadn't realised, he too was excellent, started taking up the flooring and installed dehumidifiers. Someone coming next week to take everything for storage.
We are hoping to stay in the house as the work goes on but we will probably need to move out when the kitchen gets ripped out we did manage to get some stuff upstairs so saved some things
We have lived here 44 years and never seen anything like that before, 11 houses in the street affected.
Good job we have good insurance some of the neighbours haven't even had their rep out yet.

Michael, very sorry to hear of your situation, it made me wonder about the reasons why after all that time in the same place, what may be the cause?
I have noticed around my area that in recent years the flooding always appears in the same places and it is always drains that dont drain away as lage puddles remain afterards for days. I am sure the aurhorities dont bother to investigate why.
There is one road not far from me that never flooded until they built (2007) a wastewater treatment works literally over the hedge, the drains in that area have never worked since .
So when you finally get sorted take a look around your locality and see if there are any signs of what might have caused this as I am pretty sure that there will have been heavier rains in the past 40 years which didnt cause flooding in your area. Keep a haad mate

Thanks Tony, I think the drains were blocked and couldn't cope with the amount of water. We had the fire brigade here for 2 hours but it made no improvement, the water company whose drain there are turned up with 2 big vacuum machines to suck the water up which made a big difference. The only thing is we already under water by then, they water entered the house about 2100 and we didn't get to bed until 0345 bailing out water and they were still sucking water until 0630.
There has been a lot of building houses in around,not close but all straining the system. Even thunder Thursday didn't get us in trouble, we live beside an old pit heap which is all grassed and trees but it's always never give us any cause for concern until last year. The council put a drain in in 2001 to stop flooding further in the estate, last year they made a footpath over the top over it and so blocking the drain. When we queried this they said they had no idea there had been a drain there.We will make our case again but the usual cry is no money yet they have spent hundreds of millions on reopening an old railway line. Sorry to have gone on a bit.

Sorry to hear of the bad News on the Flood into your House Michael, not a very pleasant experience i am sure!
Like you there though we too have had torrential Rains this Year and many Houses are Flooded or gone under completely, so its a very sad story all over the World.

Feel for you there too though, but reckon we all can feel lucky in a way that we were not in the USA with the recent Cyclones and Storms !

Michael, I think you have every right, when you get sorted you might want to give the council some earache as all the things you mentioned have a bearing on the problem. We have issues here with power cuts, one this month already, but we believe it is caused by adding more and more properties to the existing system without uprating it. Got so bad I bought a 3kw generator which an be run if the outage lasts more than an hour or two. But the priciple is the same, no joined up thinking by the planners.

Been busy packing ornaments and Trish's precious things to put in the loft ready for the removal men to take the furniture,cooker,fridge freezer etc away for storage.
Got to try and make the most of it now, can smile now at me plodging in my shorts and sandals. As Doc says it's not as bad as other places at least we have a roof over our heads and a place to sleep. Might have a couple of cans of budwieser tonight.

Michael, hope you get your home sorted , terrible thing to have to go through. Only a few weeks ago I stood anxiously watching the water creep closer and closer to my back door. Thankfully no damage done as it never made the back step.
Hopefully your insutance company come good and your home will be back as it was. A group of neighbours have had a whip round and bought a tool to lift the drain grids and in our road have cleared visable debris from the drains. Also using rods you can screw to add lengths rodded through as best they could, on one section they obviously cleared a blockageas the drains further along the road cleared.
The council and United Utilities when approached showed no interest in the problem.

Now concerning your choice of beer!!! Budweiser!!! hopefully your taste buds prefer the bottle on the right. The real Budweiser

Hi Michael.
You are unlucky to get your places flooded, but lucky you had a good insurer, out her people are still waiting after two years, their houses went under water, and down South they ar still waiting to get sorted after the 2020 bush fires. Hope you get back in your home soon.
