    Default Grin and bear it

I have had back problems all my life, due to a slight curvature*of the spine.* I was told that had my guardians*taken me to a specialist as a young child, my spine could have been realigned, after childhood the bones are set and can't be shifted.

I have just grinned and bore it, However the past couple of years it has progressively worsened, and over the years pastimes*have slowly been eliminated.

This*week I went to my orthopedist who gave me the news "Avoid standing still, walking is OK."* So there goes my fly fishing, I had to scrap wading*in the stream after*slipping ass over teat*in a stream on a nice winter's day..* Trout love cold water, I don't. So it was fishing from a bank, no wading and not many fish, but it was better than nothing. So now I've got nothing.

Now I'm 86, living alone, but I'm not whinging.* I retired at 47, my late wife and I had years traveling all over Europe and North America, with trips into the Caribbean, Mexico and North Africa,13 years of it, then another 20 odd living lakeside and I could fish, on my dock, 15ft from my bedroom or out on my boat.
    *
There wasn't a day that I didn't tell my wife that I loved her, and she didn't respond "I love you too".* Even when we had had a "Blewie". Oz for a row.* She would get*over it in hours, I would sulk for a couple of days, she would spoil me, cook things I loved for dinner, shepherd's pie, steak pie (she drew the line at cooking kidneys) and laughed at me trying to sulk.* "Poor baby, she would*say and laugh".* How the hell could you stay mad at someone like that?

So. I came to the conclusion, I've fished in most of the best trout waters in North America, fished in OZ, NZ, UK, France, Germany, Norway and Sweden and caught heaps of fish, I've skied the best runs in the USA and Canada. Got buggered knees to prove it. Dined in the best restaurants and stayed in the finest hotels and great B and Bs , farms, and a few castles in Ireland, UK, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Madrid, etc. and 34 years*with a remarkable woman.

I've scrubbed kitchen decks, washed pots and pans while crossing the line, dripping in sweat, at 16. I've cooked eggs, cracked them one handed, holding a tray of eggs in the other, sweating like a pig over an oil burning stove in the tropics. shared a cabin with eight others and wouldn't "swop*it for quids".

I hated Gravesend, every moment of it, but it was worth it to get the five years of memories I have of the Merch.

So to hell with fly fishing, I love reading and there's heaps of books out there*and more coming into print every day. And I have my memories.

What's your "grin and bear it" tale?

    Cheers, Rodney

    Well Rodney
There are many points that you make and quite a few relate so closely to my life!
This regarding the Text about you and the dear Wife, that is also something i do sdaily, with of course the same great responses.

Nothing though to do with back problems, but as you may know have had Heart Condition and large 6 Bypass Operation , that after a few Years earlier of having 2 Stents fitted!

Like you not complaining at all, as its all part of life, some good some bad!

As for the Catering side , well that too i have gone through, and more besides! My Training not at any Navy Training School, but at a Catering School run by the South African Railways and Harbours those days! It was also i guess similar to the Vindi, but we had to spend Six Months locked up in there, no outing leave untill the end!

Also have suffered (But managed ) this Tinnitus for over 50 Years now, but again not winghing about it!

Yes life can be cruel at times, but we most of us just grin and bare it, what else can you do, as i found out very early on that worying doesnt help!

So i just take most everything with a Pinch of salt and find it has made my life so much more easy going!

Cheers and you take care there, you will adjust to the new ways in time!

Books can be a very relaxing and at times educational experience! LOL

I guess at some times we have all had to grin and bear it.
But i look at it from another perspective.
I volunteer at the local Community Health center and on Friday assist with the men's group.
Now down to 16 men of all ages and conditions.
About 8 or 9 younger than me.
They have all manner of problems, social, medical and physical.
One stroke victim, one with acquired brain injury many with hearing problems.
Thye do their best to remain happy and I enjoy my time with them.
But I look around and thank my God that I am still healthy and active with no need for regular medication.

We can all whinge and moan at times, but when you do next time just look around and see how lucky you are compared to some others.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.

    HI Rod
    Great read mate.
When I was four I was in hospital with double pneumonia, but after being born three weeks premature and able to fit into a pint jug that was nothing.
I never had an illness when I was at sea, had three days in hospital in Wellington NZ with quinsy, pissed me off as I had to pay off a ship going on the Mans run, NZ, States, Canada.
Working in the building industry nearly fifty years I was never what you would call ill untill I had a mild heart attack at 62, and retired, but only for about a month, them got a job on a Ferry until I turned seventy. went to live back in NZ for five years then came back to good old Aus. Coming up to 91 I do all the vacuuming cleaning dishes etc as my wife has bad knees from jumping off a crane when she was a kid.
The only thing I am worrying about is getting my licence renewed in July as my eyes are playing up a bit, I may try and get a pair of strap on binoculars LoL
