The closest we have come to nuclear war in our lifetime was 1962 with the Cuban missile crisis.
The US were prepared to take every action to prevent Russian missiles on Cuban soil.
There are now American missiles facing in only one direction all along the borders of Russia.

#11 I remember the Cuban Crisis very well Louis as was on ships trading with Cuba during that fiasco which brought the world to the edge. History can’t be changed but in my view only, certainly not the views of any media exposure, faults were made on both sides of the so called Iron Curtain . America’s panic over the word communist and making it illegal as a political party and barring people like Charlie Chaplin was to most people very extreme and didn’t make for good diplomacy. If a country decides to take the path of communism then that is up to them and not others to decry. All this reds under the bed political hoo hah made a basis for the present world situation today , history can’t be changed , but diplomacy can. All these hot heads demanding war to the extreme must be silenced by the real general public and their wants not some over self egoists who want it their way or the highway as the saying goes There has to be sane people at the helm of all the countries in the world . At the present moment in time there are too many criminal lunatics. Whose only excuse is politics . JS

Sweden & Finland have both applied for membership of NATO. Putins war with Ukraine has had exactly the opposite effect seeing as Putin said he would never accept Nato encroaching on Russias borders. Well Nato will now have a future Nato border extending 1271 Kms when Finland join Nato.

When Berlin was split after the war, the Allies had the west the Russians the East, it was only after the people from the West who used to come over and buy all the goods that were a lot cheaper there than in the West with their higher buying power that the East German Govt decided to build the Wall to stop them, as it was stuffing their economy up. That was the sole reason originally for the Berlin Wall. Despite all the Bulls54t that has gone on since to discredit why it was there.

The first part of your post Des was the cause more than likely the basic cause of the Berlin Airlift , but as usual the media put different innuendoes on the reason causing more controversy and bad publicity to the Russians , all the way through the after war period , even the statements that were made by the media referring to Churchill supposedly stating he wanted to carry on and go through Russia I find hard to believe especially to all the lives lost due to his decision to supply them with war materials , probably another statement taken out of context which they have infinitive expertise at. Cheers JS,

In St Petersburg in 2017 and from what we saw and heard at that time Putin was the hero.
So popular he was able to if he wished make himself president for life.
But all media only published what they wanted the people to know, not the truth.
Bit like western media when you think of it.

But have heard from a Ukraine lady who works in a local supermarket that slowly the truth is being told by some media there.
    Where will it all end?
Who knows, but it may well be the case that the west will allow it to continue as long as it suits their purpose.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

All this Bravado talk between politicians of opposing views reminds me of that game we used to play as kids , the I’ll stare you out game , the first one to blink lost. That’s about the age level of a lot of politicians. I suspect a lot of them have false eyes painted on their lids , and then just go to sleep. JS

It is a simple fact as long as Putin remains in power Russia is a very real threat to the Western Europe. Putin only has to get a few of his mates to back him. The EU has to get 27 heads of state to agree.
There are some who found it amusing when President Macron & Chancellor Merkel called for the formation of a European Army that was in 2018, maybe they had a point!!! Only this week a US general stated that the UK armed forces are no longer a top level fighting force. Well I suppose we can blame successive chancellors for that down the years.
In 1939, the UK had approx 890,000 including reservists/TA that was the total complement for all branches of the armed forces. Today we have less than 150,000. Any boy scouts here? what was the motto BE PREPARED.
Europe are at the mercy of the USA for defence, I would not hold my breath waiting for the USA to ride to the rescue of Europe again.

#19 when Merkel & Macron proposed a European army both countries had like 22 out of the 30 Nato member states underspent by a considerable amount, their agreed 2% of G.D.P. The U.K were still spending the agreed amount. Which was being used to upgrade a lot of our forces. Why on earth would any country hand over its own armed forces to be controlled by others when those countries have no desire to spend on their own defence. The UK had already given up to the E.E.C most of the other powers of an independent state. (We were paying for that privelege too) The British tax payers are paying for the upkeep of the British armed forces. I for one like a Nato alliance where EACH member state still has jurisdiction over it's own forces.
