Maybe modernised workhouses like we had in our early youth would sort out the malingerers from the genuine cases of the needy. If one needs support off you go then to the workhouse until you get on your feet again, free board and lodgings , you don’t need money , you can of course to fill in your time sew a few mail bags up or other work not requiring anything too strenuous. Your free to go anytime . JS

WE have work for the dole here but it is not that well supervised.
Guy in the paper today, on $200 a week from the dole, offered a job at a supermarket on $450 a week for 30 hours.
Turned it down as he said he would lose some benefits so his take home pay would only be $100 more than the dole.
Said he was not willing to work for just $100 a week extra.

Been a few like this before and some caught out by the system and told work or nothing.
Not sure what happens to them.

James 14, some of what you say is true, but ref firemen and retirement, a fireman working 30 years can retire on two thirds pay, can retire after 25 years on half pay, if he is dismissed on medical grounds , he still draws his pension money, calculated at time served. These are very good conditions, and have altered slightly since my time. They now pay pension contributions at 17%, but can carry on after 55 on a yearly medical, can draw his lump sum, but the pension is frozen until he does retire. In my time 55 and you had to go, unless you reached senior officer rank, and then it was 60 years.

The last time I drew the dole it was like getting blood from a stone. Twice I refused to leave the building until my claim was reinstated all for £20 per week.!
