That phrase 'with all the trimmings' amuses me now. Let me explain.I'm a northern lad by birth, and we always called the Christmas decorations, streamers etc-trimmings.(well at least we did in our house).I wonder if you call the decorations trimmings anywhere else? Anyway, so one day at school,I must have been no older than 5 or 6, just before Christmas, and the class teacher ,after asking all we little ones what we were looking forward to on Christmas Day,told us what she was looking forward to. When she said she would be enjoying her Christmas Dinner with all the trimmings,I thought how strange, and nearly burst out laughing ,even raced home after school to tell Mum that Miss Collier was going to eat the trimmings as well as the turkey with her Christmas dinner and got an exasperated look from Mum.....Things we remember, and will do so for ever it seems!

Re: Good to be back lads
The first banana I ever saw was after the war , it started off green and my mother put in on the mantelpiece curled around a candlestick . I ever after associated bananas and candlesticks as one. So when some idiot in the EU declared that all bananas sold to the public had to be straight it really incensed me to the point where I decided the best thing was away from such ignorant people. I am still trying to put the logic why I mention this today. Maybe because bananas are part of the trimmings for Xmas , maybe some Frenchman wanted straight ones because they went into a stocking easier ? JS

Re: Good to be back lads
Beware now of eating Bananas as they may well be candles according to WA John.
But no doubt if so will brighten up your day.
AS to Terry, god to see you again, I wish you all the complaints of the season. that way you will not mix them up with the compliments to go with the Turkey.
BUt enjoy the season any way you wish
Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Good to be back lads
Good one Tony,
The lads from up north will understand this.
When singing.
Away in a manger, I always sang.
No crib for a bairne.
Make sense don't you think?
