Default The giant sequoias trees endangered.

The world's most massive trees, The giant Sequoias that can soar to 250feet (76 meters) and have trunks 20feet in diameter) (6 meters) and live thousands of years are endangered*form the massive fires raging from the drought, scientists claim are caused by climate change.

The giant sequoias do need*a low intensity fire to reproduce, clearing dried brush from away from the base of the trees.* However due to the drought now in effect, the fires have become larger and more intense.* Last year 14% of the protected forest was lost to fires, so far this season 44 trees have been lost.

The US government*passed the"Yosemite*and the Big Trees" Act of 1862 which saved the trees from the axes of the lumber companies. In 1906 a large grove of trees was protected*by the Federal Government and became the "Yosemite National Park".* If you ever get a chance to visit San Francisco, the Park is only a short drive away and well worth a visit.

Years ago one tree fell down across a park road, it was a massive undertaking to remove it.* So the park management left it in place and carved a hole in it and you can drive through the tree. Amazing.

All of the outlying*groves of sequoias*are protected areas today, but not however from what has now become a season of raging fires that spread literally hundreds of square miles before*they can be contained, then spring up somewhere else occasionally started by some sicko, but mostly by lightning.

Some may think climate change is a joke...sorry but I ain't laughing.

    Cheers, Rodney

WE have one here in Oz in the Balarart Botanical Gardens.
    Magnificent looking tree.
But like some of the Gum trees here, fire is needed for the seeds to be released so new trees can grow.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

True Jhonno, been there seen that. The problem is the sequoias are densely packed with an overpacking top cover. And at ground level undergrowth, which due now to the lack of rain is bone dry and becomes a massive rapid fire in no time. this very hot fire sets fire to the bark, again dry, and races up the tree to the cover, which burns into the surrounding tree. Lack of top cover kills the tree. The fires mostly start outside the area of these giant trees, but are spreading more rapidly due to bone dry condition and become hundreds of square miles of fire before the fire crews can get on station.

    Taken from the News.

"96 large fire are burning, tens of thousands have been evacuated in California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Fires are burning over 5,400 Sq. miles. In 2020 California cleared 10.000 damaged trees near the giant sequoias."

My best friend ( an ex-Brit) lives in Medford, Oregon, and escaped losing his house to a September, 2020 fire by just one street. Three nearby towns and whole neighborhoods near him wiped out. His daughter lost her home. between his area fire and one near Portland, Oregon, a half a million people where forced to evacuate.

    Cheers, Rodders

Rodders, as you know here in Oz, particularly in Victoria where we live, bush fires are almost a way of life.
Last hear was very bad in NSW, not so much here in Vic, but we have had some vary bad ones over the years.
The Ash Wednesday and Black Saturday were two of the very bad ones.

Very wet spring this year so growth will be good, but when it dries out it can get very dangerous.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
