I went for a walk along the seafront this morning, first time forover a week as it's been a bit too cold and windy to enjoy, plenty of people jogging
and others walking their dogs, walking their dogs, there are benches along the way for people to enjoy, but today, for me it was a poignant sight to
see three benches with bouquets of flowers, maybe a sign of this rotten time we are experiencing???, love the walk and smell of ozone :) . As always
when I'm here, my mind wanders to the history of the Thames there is always something to think of, inthe 1670's during the Dutch Ango wars, Dutch
warships sailed up the Thames wit impunity, the first town they came to was Sheerness which they invaded and captured. The Dutch ships carried on
up river to the town of Gravesend, they bombarded the town with cannon fire, turned around and sailed back down to the river Medway where there
was a number of RN ships of the line anchored off Chatham, the RN ships were not crewed and only had watchmen aboard. The Dutch spies had done
their job well, the Dutch ships took their prizes in tow they burnt and sank what they didn't want, it was the end of the Dutch Anglo war and a very
shameful day for us, as said, I love walking along here, so much has happened here and amazing sights, like HMS London sailing out of the Medway
and suddennly blowing to bits, probably because somebody took a lighted candle into the gunpowder store:confused:, cheers
there is something about the sea air specially at this time when we are stuck in so much .....enjoyed it in shields recently .....cappy
John 119, nothing beats the sea air, myself and wife just come back from a walk on Sandown beach, lovely beach with lots of fine sand when the tides out. We love that walk, my wife has bad knee, waiting for the op, she normally has to watch where she walks for fear of tripping, but on the sand is ideal. Lots of room to avoid contact with everyone, and i also love to watch the dogs, they are a joy, kt
did you ever notice, each port had its own smell, New York, Rotterdam, Bombay, actually forget Bombay, you can smell that anywhere if you down wind from a midden.Quote:
