Who owns Scotland?
You would think this is an easy question to answer but many of the people or institutions who own Scotland can be very difficult to track down. Here are some on record.
Forestry & Land Scotland 1 million acres
National Trust Scotland 180,000 acres
Anders Holch Povlsen Danish clothing tycoon 220,000 acres
Crown Estates. Half of the Scottish foreshore
Duke of Buccleuch 200,000 acres
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum Ruler of Dubai 63,000 acres
Overseas tax havens 750,000 acres
Church of England 32,000 forestry acres
RSPB Scotland 125,000 acres
John Muir Trust 60,000 acres
Local councils 81,000 acres
MoD 25,000 acres

Re: Who owns Scotland?
By the wording Louis one would say that slavery was supposed to have been extinguished many decades ago in the uk. But if you own land then you also own whatever is on it. Where do all the people live then ? Do they only own the small parcels they have bought . I think one would have to go much more deeper into the law to set the records much straighter than they appear to be. Like the aborigine people of Australia maintain they are the real owners of the land , anyone who thinks this as 100% true would certainly have a job in the modern day law of land registry. It is way above my head and probably others , some Mickey Mouse Lawyer probably knows more than we do. JS

Re: Who owns Scotland?
In reality, as once told to me by an Abbo, no one owns the land, it is there for all to share.
We are only custodians for the next generation.
Here in Oz you may well own your own house and have tittle to the land on which it stands.
But that tittle only goes to the depth of two meters, that means if oil or gold was found in your back garden it would not be yours.
Look at UK, Prince Charles owns a bucket load of land and property.
But here is an odd one for you.
When Wolfe beat the Frogs at the battle of somewhere in Canada he claimed the whole of Canada for the monarch.
So in theory the Queen owns Canada, but do not tell Den, he thinks he has a claim to it.
Happy daze John in Oz.
Life is too short to blend in.

Re: Who owns Scotland?
HALF of Scotland is owned by just 500 people, few of whom are actually Scots. As Britain's great land-owning aristocratic families decline, a new breed of foreign laird is exploiting Scotland's arcane land laws to buy up tracts of the Highlands and islands - Europe's last great wilderness.

Re: Who owns Scotland?
Trying to find who owns England would be a near impossible task.
Much of the land and expensive real estate is owned by offshore trusts which hide behind various company names and locations in tax havens.
My guess at the largest landowners are the Monarchy (Crown Estates), Church of England, Arabs, Russians and Indians.
When I was dredging 1p of every ton of sand went to the Crown as the Queen owns the mineral rights of beaches and inshore waters.
