    Battery on my Land Rover is heavy duty for the Diesel engine. Without warning it gave up the ghost one morning.
    Called my brother out and asked for a start up with the jumper leads.
    Tried but it would not start, not enough power.
    Called the RACV out and he had to use his heavy duty starter to get me going.
    That was the Saturday and Monday I had to go to Port Melbourne for a service on the vehicle.
    No worries said the RACV man, call me when you are ready to go.
    Sure enough he turned up, got me started and off I went.
    New battery fitted, bank account raided by $ 185.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

    Life is too short to blend in.

    I remember being given the job of undersealing my dad's Riley with bitumastic whilst studying for second mates to earn my keep over weekends.

    thats very cheap for a service on Land Rover

    My very first car was the only BMW I have ever owned, it cost £8, was 200cc, and I could drive it with my head out of the sun roof, it only had 3 wheels but could still do 85mph, I hand painted it bright orange and silver (gloss paint I had left from other odd jobs)
    It was an Isetta bubble car

    I heard of Vanwall, they were around in 50s and possibly 60s, not sure if Stirling Moss might have driven for them at one time?

    In the early seventies I used to have a drink on Sunday lunchtimes with my old man and some of his mates. One of them was moaning about the quoted cost for a clutch change on his Cortina, so I volunteered to do it for him the next day. Unfortunately for me it snowed heavily overnight so I ended up lying under this car surrounded by six inches of snow, although the car covered the parking space I had to slide through it on my back to get under.
    Moral of the story, dont make promises while on the drink.

    I had a strange experience that I cannot explain, I took a Ford Corsair for a test drive, and within a very short time I felt extremely uncomfortable
    and quite tense, all I wanted was to get out of that car, when I returned to the showroom, they were surprised to see me back so quickly.
    At that time I had been driving for over ten years, I had driven all sorts of vehicles at BT and also had an HGV licence, fair to say I was an
    experienced driver, I have never felt anything like that before or since, I've never forgotten, and still think there was something weird about
    that car, it was definitely not for me, cheers.

    Tony Taylor #68. Stirling Moss drove for Vanwall but never won the world title, runner up a few times. I think he only drove British made cars unlike Mike Hawthorn who won the title driving for Ferrari.

    I came down to work in the Vandervell company in Western Avenue, London.
    They were advertising for engineers but what they really wanted were people like myself to train and set up special purpose automatic machines in the manufacture of the thin wall shell bearings. They were quite large machines and after all the machining had been done, there was a girl sitting at the end of the conveyor belt checking every one in ten making sure the correct tolerances were maintained.
