Scottish names in Jamaica.
Scotland played a huge part in Jamaica's slavery driven economy. During the latter part of the eighteenth and early part of the nineteenth centuries Scotland's economy grew from one of the weakest in Europe to become one of the most powerful. Glasgow is well known for its tobacco lords. Tobacco came from Virginia but the sugar trade was .ore long lasting. The vast sheds where Jamaica's sugar arrived still exist in Greenock today. Fascinating connections between Scotland and Jamaica include Scottish place names such as-: Aberdeen, Culloden, Dundee, Elgin, Glasgow, Inverness, Kilmarnock and Perth.
Many slave plantations were also given Scottish names of Monymusk, Hampden, Argyle, Glen Islay, Fort William, Montrose and Dumbarton.
St Andrew is the parish with the highest population in Jamaica.
NB. The only national flag apart from that of Scotland that includes the saltire is the flag of Jamaica.
Jamaica is the country with more Campbells per head of population than Scotland.

Fouro

Re: Scottish names in Jamaica.
The Scottish connection with Jamaica dates from 1656 when Oliver Cromwell banished 1200 Scots prisoners-of-war to the recently acquired English colony there. Subsequently the island attracted a growing number of Scottish immigrants who generally arrived as indentured servants. At the same time the government in Scotland was exiling criminals and Covenanters to Jamaica.
The last group of Scots to arrive in Jamaica during the seventeenth century, comprised a number of refugees from the failed colony at Darien. The Scots arrived in two main waves the first in 1655 when as prisoners of war they were sold as bond (indentured) servants to the English, and in 1745-46 after the failure of the Jacobite Rebellion. (Jacobites were supporters of James II’s claim to the English throne). 3,500 prisoners were taken after the Battle of Culloden of whom 936 were sentenced to exile for life in the Americas.
There are records of three ships sailing to Jamaica and Barbados with 254 prisoners. It is significant that one of the places in Jamaica with a Scottish name is Culloden. Others came in between those seeking religious freedom, those from lower-socio-economic levels such as gypsies, criminals and idlers, who were rounded up and shipped off, as well as doctors and lawyers and others from the middle class who were simply in search of a quick fortune.

Not forgetting: Irish people in Jamaica or Irish Jamaicans, are Jamaican citizens whose ancestors originated from Ireland. ... Population estimates range from 100,000 to 200,000, making Irish Jamaicans a significant minority ethnic group. Most Jamaicans with Irish ancestry also have African ancestry.

Hi Fouro.
Don't tell me that is why the Scots wear the Kilt so they can "take the knee" more easily, against the Sasinachs .

Think of that part and f the world has a similar reputation as Cornwall where some reckon they are all inter related. JS...

Re: Scottish names in Jamaica.
Go to Dunedin in NZ, just about every street and statue is of some form of Scottish descent.
There was a very large number who emigrated there in the early 1800's and did well.
there is a church, just outside the dock gate, built by them, no longer used, and is one of only a handful around the world which has a double story for the congregation.
Obviously in the early days they were all strong church people.
