having worked on a few restoration jobs for the national trust very few tradesmen are about these days fire is the most common safety concerns timber frames dust in places are like tinder and where ever you work extinguishers should be at hand simple things like rats mice and other animals chewing electrical wiring can spark fires easy? just my two Paneth ? jp

Although it would be more expensive I agree glulam, (engineered timber) would be the best product to use in the restoration.

After the Notre-Dame fire: Seems rain now threatens France's damaged cathedral.
Architects working on preserving Notre-Dame are rushing to cover the cathedral before rain can cause further damage.
Rain is forecast for the French capital on Wednesday, with further showers predicted for Thursday.
There are already plans to erect a large, purpose-built "umbrella" on the roof of the landmark, which will have its own peak and protect the structure while reconstruction takes place.
But the umbrella is not ready - and the threat of impending rain is too serious to wait.
Alongside protecting the cathedral from the rain, the removal of the damaged scaffolding is one of the first steps towards the cathedral's full restoration - a process that could take weeks.

Christchurch Cathedral in NZ took the big hit in 2011.
Still there has been nothing done to renovate after years of should we or not?
There are now plans to do something but it will take about 6 to 7 years before any noticeable progress is seen.
Notre Dame will be like a phoenix,
it will be done. Eventually.

were are the green party france will need 1000s of oak trees some from this country question was the church insured not having a go but about 70% of the funds will go to restoration experts {so called} I have worked with a lot of them and I would not let them hang a picture? jp
Hopefully, a lot of thought will go into fire detection, prevention and best practice
for fire fighters if it were to occur again, also action to ward of terrorism etc.

I would have thought the amount of water pumped in by the fire fighters would have taken it's toll on the building, thankfully a lot of the treasures were already removed before the fire.Quote:
