We were talking this morning, a group of us, about similar situations in the past.
Droughts here in Oz of similar magnitude to the current one.
Droughts in UK in the 50's early 60';s and the heat wave of 1975.
Then the claim in the late 60's by scientists that an ice age was coming soon, still waiting for it.

Science in this area is not an exact science, rather one made of possibilities, suppasitions and personal judgement.

But the drought here is breaking, just as it always eventualy does.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

There was a slight slowdown in coal exports only to a certain port in China, where the local commissar wanted to show Australia who it was held the talking stick, a bit of panic here which is what China wanted, Australia was beating the US drum over the South China sea, as far as China is concerned it is in their territorial waters and have never stopped any ships from navigating through it. So stupid of Australia to bite the hand that feeds it, the US wont take the coal if China doesn't. The port is now operating fully taking Australian coal.

There in lies the problem Des, bloody politicians as usual.
Leave business to deal with such matters which are business related and politicians stick to doing what they do best, stuffing things up.

Recieved this today from an ex mamber and it puts a lot of the 'climate change' argument into perspective and goes well with the previous post.

The electric car concept seemed too good to be true, and it appears that’s correct.

It's an impossibility and most certainly will send Australia to the wall.

The monthly average domestic household energy need is 880 kilowatts or 10,560 kilowatts a year.

There are over 18,000,000 (eighteen million) vehicles registered in New South Wales of which 12,000,000 are cars.

Let's say that the lowest minimum horse power for cars is 100 - most are between 150 to 350. One hundred horse power (100 hp) equals 73.7 kilowatts.

73.7 kilowatts multiplied by twelve million is 882,000,000 kilowatts, and that will be every day

That's 322 billion kilowatts a year. So, where is all the power coming from just to charge vehicles? And this is only in NSW. It's an impossibly.

At the moment it takes 16 hours to fully charge an electric car and on a special "quick" charge the time is, allegedly, two hours. It doesn't take much imagination to picture the frustration, delays and confusion at refill stations (wherever they'll be located) during peak hour and during holiday periods. Even at the quickest rate of two hours queues will be thirty kilometres long. The whole of NSW would become gridlocked. Imagine too if an electric car in peak time on the M1 to Gosford or the M5 to Campbelltown hour experienced a flat battery? No jerry cans in the boot to save the day there. Bill Shorten is leading us all into a living nightmare.

In the older suburbs such as Redfern, Balmain, Dulwich Hill, Paddington, Leichhardt, Annandale, Woollahra, Cremorne, Neutral Bay, Enmore, Newtown, Rozelle, Darlinghurst, Kirribilli, Wollstonecraft, and Waverton, where there is only off-street parking, how will those car owners go about charging their vehicles. The whole concept is a joke and Labor doesn't care, just like Chris Bowen's response to pensioners regarding franking credits and negative gearing - if you don't like it vote for someone else.

Message to all the grey nomads, sell you caravans now because an electric powered car hasn't been invented yet that can tow a van, and if one could, the cost to run it would be prohibitive - not to mention a flat battery between Mt Isa and Katherine.

You may find this of interest as again someone with understanding telling it as it is.
Bit like your opposition leaders brother I believe.

And it came to pass that the anticipated savior failed to be elected and his gore was in anger.
So he set forth to bring an new testament to the people and low he was taken by the green disciples as his own. For his teaching reached far and wide saying, behold I bring you news of great warming for the planet.
And all were sore afraid for he was the prophet of the new testament.

But then came forth a new disciple who cried to all, behold there is a new and everlasting hope for you all, I bring you climate change, and behold the green disciples grew in number saying this man is the true savior. For he hath spoken in volumes that we must go forth with the new teaching and reach to all the people of the earth. And he was much pleased and praised those who did follow the climate change testament.

Two days ago there was on talk back radio here in Melbourne an American scientific engineer here to give a number of lectures. What he spoke about was alarming but puts the argument of Climate Change into some perspective.

As he said, this is not about the climate as we consider it to be. The tropics are still tropical, the temperate zones still temperate and though there may be a change in weather patterns the climate is still the same.

The climate the world leaders speak of is the Economic Climate, and it is as follows.

The world wide plan is to increase profits for the major companies while at the same time increasing tax revenue for governments from this profit. By moving to renewable energy such as Solar and Wind Turbines there will be a dramatic drop in the number of employees required to operate, power stations, coal mines, oil rigs etc. Reduced manpower costs increases profits, and so tax revenue. In a similar manner electric cars will also require far less manpower in the production chain.

This will bring on major unemployment even though governments will say the 'new economy' will take up the unemployed. Most of the new employment will come in areas such as aged care and the medical profession,m but not all are suited to such.
Here in Oz the motor manufacturing industry is now closed, thousands now out of work with little likelyhood of finding some other form of employment.

I find much truth in what the engineer had to say, one only has to look at the Solar industry to see that once in place it requires very few personel to maintian it.
It will not be for this generation to worry, but where will your grand children and great grand children find employment?

Will this bring about a situation where the people rise up enough for war to break out?

In 1980 the population of the planet was 4 billion, it is now 8 billion. What will it be in another 37 years?
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Pie in the sky dreaming, all electric cars.
The existing electrical network in the UK has very little spare capacity at the point of generation.
The local network from the local transformer will have to be upgraded to cope with all the cars being charged.
Each house will have to have a charging point fitted, UK Gov. At the moment contributes 500 pounds towards installation.
There is a hell of a lot of work to be done before electric cars arrive en mass.
    Another con?
    Vic
PS some people are questioning if there is enough cobalt in the world for the batteries.

can you imagine a long terraced street, every house has 1 or 2 cars out side.
HUNDREDS of Cables across the pavements to the houses and cars,
Total chaos.. People falling over them , suing the owners for thousands,

An interesting point was raised here the other day about charging the batteries.

Fine if you have a garage, but how do you manage if the only place you can park is on the road?

Like so many other wonderful concepts govs in general get a bit carried away with what they think can be done.
Any new idea to them is another possible way to rise taxes.
