What kind of Vap. does 400 ton per day, The best I was with was the ATLAS flash evaporator which made 30 tons per day plus using the waste heat from the main engine, the drinking water was passed though a silver ionizer, other ships added minerals. I also sailed with a reverse
osmosis system which was useless.
John #57 as you know in all bush areas the only water is often tank water from the rain. The people manage quite well on it.
All the modern day cruise ships have desal plants on board, though they also take on fresh water to suppliment it.
The taste is not bad but the water tends to be a bit flat as very little oxygen is added to it.
One man asked if the water in the toilets was fresh or salt, easy way to find out said his cabin steward, use it to clean your teeth.
Tank water gets filtered , I’m talking about going out without your brolly putting your face to the heavens and opening mouth to get that supposedly sweet nectar containing amongst other things bits of flies and other unseemly things. Brings to mind the water taken straight off the water line in Bombay. Probably never been treated. Used to drop chlorine into the tanks on ship to hopefully avoid dysentery and other waterborn diseases. A friend of mine goes up to Bali a lot and always takes a bottle of whiskey with him, I know he’s a beer drinker so asked him what the whiskey was for, he said in all seriousness , to clean my teeth. Ha Ha NICE ONE; I was on Newcastle quayside Sunday market, years ago before the river was cleaned up; little kiddy in front of me looking at the river sees a "johnny" floating by and says to his dad, "whats that?", quick as flash his dad replied "its a seagulls wellie". When I was on the farm in Childers, near Bunderburg, in Queensland (2nd God's Country). Water for farm irrigation, toilets, laundry, showering and cleaning was all pumped up from the dam. Drinking and cooking water came into the kitchen taps and was drawn up from collection tanks. This water was saved from the rain which flowed down into gutters which connected into the storage tanks. They were quite large as rain was sudden dumps followed by drought. Les, my mate the farmer/owner was a terror about wasting water as it was quite expensive to have to have a load from town brought out. I never gave it a thought about filtering, I do know he thoroughly cleaned the gutters before the rainy season started.
