Re: Superstition
The number 13 is considered unlucky for many in the West. Not so for Chinese! Just like Westerners, Chinese do share a love of lucky numbers and other superstitious beliefs, although in quite a different manner. It is part of the Chinese culture.

Re: Superstition
A Liverpool Ship owner in 1885, was not happy that his ships were held up every weekend because Sailors didn't like to sail on a Friday. Unlucky.
So to prove them wrong he had a new ship designed on a Friday,
the order was placed with the builder on a Friday,
the keel was laid on a Friday,
the ship was Launched on a Friday
and Named S.S. FRIDAY.
They even found a Captain by the name of Captain Friday.
The ship was loaded on a Friday
and then she sailed on a Friday, bound for New York.
Captain Friday , his crew and his ship the S.S. FRIDAY were Never seen again.

Re: Superstition
I was born in No 13 Mineral St Belfast. A few years ago I took my son and his wife to show them the house I was born in. I should have went a week earlier as the place had been knocked down for a new developement, still I have a brick from it as the front door step was still in place so picked one up.

Re: Superstition
LOUS ref 17, you must have been at sea before myself 1957, because on all the ships i was on was steak and chips on a Friday and that was evening meal, i remember being amazed, we had 3 cooked meals a day, had never had frying steak at home. Mind was a long time ago and memory could be duff, but sure i,m right because i hate fish, kt

Re: Superstition
By Gum, KT, you were on some good feeding ships. Steak and chips. had to go to B.A to get a steak.
on some of mine we had 6ozs of offal and 6ozs of brackish water, per day, per man, per haps.
The only fresh meat were the cockroaches, Pound for pound, more protein in than Steak. So not too bad.
