###when i first came to yorkshire .....i worked in the mill as a percher yes a percher ...this was followed by a burler yes a burler ....i learned cloth is not a roll......but is a piece........it has strings if there is a fault attached.....hence the saying there will be strings attached......i learned punjabi .....and swapped cheese sandwiches for there chappati dipped in curry yum yum.....the boss was a true gent and loved my seafaring stories ....which i duly embellished to suit the situation.....he asked me one day could i play golf ....i couldnt but said i could we went of and i found i was caddying .......the other mill owners also had there caddies.... i was the fittest some of there caddies were office wallahs .....when we won i was allowed to sit with the staid old millowners for lunch who liked my stories of the sea the boss said he would give me a chance to go selling cloth.......i loved the job i got a company car ...thought i was the king .....after 2 years or so i was known in leeds and manchester .......iwas at headingly watching rugby league when a man approached me and said his salesman was retiring and he had heard i was selling very well and what would it cost for me to join his company they employed some 400 people i doubled what i was getting and to my suprise he said when can you start....after three years he passed away he was a true gent icould not work with the new regime.....the story goes on but as i said i was a percher and a burler once in my life......cappy a tattie peeling purching burling .....son of a bitch.....regards
#45, Hi Rodney, We used to take my son over to Southchurch Hall on a nice summers day in the 1970s, sometimes with a little picnic, it's a lovely old building set in beautiful gardens, my son used to take a small model yacht to sail on the pond.
I've never read the history of it but I know it is a Medieval building, I discovered it when working on BT I thought it was a hidden Gem, I've got some lovely memories of those summer days. cheers JC

#62, I've noticed things are beginning to change a bit Ivan, in my road living opposite to me in separate houses there are
two married couples with children, the two men never worked for at least 2-3 years and then both started work within a couple of months of each other so I can only think the governments firmer approach to unemployment benefits has started to take effect and is forcing some of the fit young men back into work by making their dole money less than they can earn, hope so
anyway. My son left school 30 years ago, in that time he's had two jobs his first was in electronics and the company folded after he'd been there fifteen years, he got his present job straight away and is now the production manager. In the 30 years
since leaving school he has never been unemployed and until he broke his arm he had never been off sick, I'm very proud of him. cheers JC
It was after WW2 that many from West Indies came to UK, they took up the jobs the locals did not want to do.
Little has cahnged in that arena, cleaners in shopping centres are now all from overseas, trolley collectors the same. Go to any club late at night and the security guard will be from some African nation or similar.
So many now do not want to do any work they think is beneath them, there are some Taxi drivers I know with Phd but are not prepared to start at the bottom.
Until those people are prepared to give it a go in the manner that some migrants do there will always be problems for them.
All on this site live in democratic countries , you choose by your vote the society you wish to live in. This could be a highly educated well paid economic society where your taxes help to pay for health care , education , infrastructure etc. , a race to the top. If on the other hand you believe in profits before people you can vote for a race to the bottom to complete with the workers in India , Pakistan or China. The choice is yours , our new prime minister , Mrs May , has said she has seen the rising demand for change in the western world and has promised a government for all not just the privileged few , as previous Tory governments , encouraging words , we can only wait to see if words result in actions. The election of Trump has shaken the world , the workers left behind by globalisation have put him in the White House hoping a billionaire capitalist will give them jobs and a degree of prosperity. I hope for their sakes they are right and do not soon see their hopes shattered.
why do people go on abouit zero hours contracts.Similar schemes have always been around.
Dockers used to turn up for work and wait to get picked.
Reporters on bbc radio were always on a self employed basis and didn't get paid if they had no story.
Actors are self employed and if they are on tv they have a day rate and might only get paid for the day they work .
I sold insurance for 30 year on commission only and if I didn't sell I didn't get paid even though I had a mortgage and 2 children
zero contracts have always been around it just didn't have a name.
What the do gooders forget to mention is that people are given a chance to experience getting out of bed in the morning and making an effort to make something out of their lives
Dockers got a days pay if they didn't work,it was less than working.Heard the saying three on the hook two on the book.He had three days work and two days signing on.
