When water freezes it expands so if the ice shelf was to melt it will take up less space.

NZ scientists last year said the southern ice shelf is wider and thicker now than ever recorded.

Scientists today in UK said they cannot explain what is occurring with the northern ice shelf. Gives you real confidence in the scientific community when they come out with statements such as that.

But I was taught that the climate was what it is, that is the tropics are tropical, the moderate regions are moderate and the artic is artic. What may be changing is weather patterns which the Greens and others are using to their advantage in order to gain votes from the uninformed, and of course the complete DH brigade.

Are there any good weather men aboard????I have a tree front of my house which gets covered in red berries every year lots and lots of birds descend on it this year not one bird,any significance in what kind of weather lies ahead.

####same here jim the birds are not taking the berries ..i think the birds are still living off worms and the ground is still soft no hard freeze yet perhaps they are saving the berries for jan or even feb......a robin in my garden is active and a couple of blackbirds also ......it is very mild in this area at the moment....cappy

My Holly Tree has had more Berries on this year, all the birds came and eat them, stripped it completely. They say Plenty of Berries a cold winter is coming.

I have a holly in the garden which is smothered in berries every year, my wife cuts some pieces in late November and preserves them in the shed, because every single year by Xmas the birds have scoffed the lot. The bird i see the most this time of year is the Scandinavian Redwing, looks similar to a thrush, except it has a white streak above the eyes. I have not seen a Thrush here for many years, kt

##always have thrushes in the garden in summer .....they are beutiful birds ...and have two sets of blackbirds nesting each year ...but nothing like the oz and kiwis will have......cockatoos etc ......cappy

A cockortwo can do a lot of damage as some young ladies will tell you.

But yes we get all manner of birds here even in winter. Hand feeding a family of Magpies who had three chicks this year, Doves, Sparrows, Blackbirds who think they own the place, Butcher birds, Ravens, Green Parrots, Rainbow Loraketes who eat most of my fruit, and a number of others that drop in for a feed when we put bird food out. But thyey are wonderful to watch and we enjoy all of them.

Jim. no birds eating the berries, get the overcoats out you are in for some heck of a winter.
