The killer of the French priest was according to the police known to them as a potential terrorist. If he was known to them why the bloody hell wa she allowed to roam the streets?
Judges and magistrates very often pass poor sentences that have no relevance to the crime, some so ridiculously mild they are beyond laughing at.

Some years ago I asked a Barrister at the Uni why, this was his answer.

You begin as a solicitor and if good enough go on to become a Barrister, from there to QC, or as here in Oz Senior Council, and from there if very good and considered by the Bar to be the right person on to become a judge or magistrate.

But the problem lies in the legal rooms they come from. Most are either defence or proscecution QC's. According to my friendly barrister the make up is 75% from defence and only 25% from proscecution.

Those from defence no doubt tend to see potential good in the offenders so give very light sentences.

Until the percentages change the system will remain as it is, broken beyond repair.

Every trial should be a trial by jury of nationals of that country and to quit the haphazard of sentencing this should also be done by the jury, These should be told the sentences that could be imposed if found guilty. If there were 5 sentences Life Imprisonment, ten years imprisonment,5 years imprisonment.a good beviourable bond, or death by hanging. He could then ask the jury what number to quote. I would probably go for No 5 in a lot of cases. The Judge could then be relieved of his Godlike mission he was incapable of doing in any case and would be able to sleep easy at night knowing the money was still going in the bank. JWS

Therein lies another problem. The gov makes the laws but it is up to the courts to interprate them and sadly very often the sentence is not what was intended.

john we supposed to have a gun law here 10 years I don't think anyone has ever got that sentence yet there is a hell of a lot of guns on our streets now?? jp

Probably brought in by the illegals themselves. Have gun will travel. That used to be a good show on telly years ago fairly late at night and just managed to run from the pub about 2310 to get the start of it. Think it was Richard Boone was the main character, He had horses heads on the ivory handles of both six shooters he carried. All dressed in black with matching horse, real cowboys in those days. Although bet he never met a real four legged one in his life. Theres a thing now as we cant call dogs mongrels. How come we can still call cows, cows. JWS
