I'm at that stage of life now where it doesn't take much to hear a word which jogs my memory and sets me off on a 'trip'.
I don't mean cement boxes, but does anyone remember a TV sketch-it might have been the Kenny Everett Show -where he was dressed as HM complete with sword conferring the Royal Warrant 'By Royal Appointment to HM The Queen' at a ceremony. All kinds of things were lined up waiting for her sword to appoint their respective manufacturers...a Rolls motor car,a selection of Highland shortbread, a designer hat, a luxury sailing cruiser, a deluxe porcelain tea service, and right at the end of the line.......a cement mixer.

Here in Port Melbourne there is a large cement plant and ships regularly take a cargo of it in specilay designed ships.
A few weeks ago watching a ship being loaded I heard a young lad, about 8or 9 say to his dad, 'won't it go hard by the time it gets where it has to go'? Oh the innocence of youth.

Cement will go hard without water as the Nigerian government discovered when they ordered all the cement required for the new harbour berths and infrastructure for the Lagos port to arrive at the same time, resulting in dozens of vessels sitting off Lagos for months on end with the cement hardening as the berths they were to discharge at had not been built with the cement for the berths sitting in those ships at anchor.

The Greeks made a lot of money at that time, used to buy ships from the scrapyard in pairs, one with a main engine working, but both with deck machinery workable (note the difference) the one with the good main engine towed the other vessel to Lagos, they only insured the cargoes but never the vessels so were able to offer cheap freight rates as only one crew to pay, no vessel insurance, and Confirmed Letter of Credit in place upon completion of loading and activated upon vessel sailing. The Greeks were masters of opportunity

When carrying cement in offshore vessels is carried in tanks the same as Barytes and Bentonite. Is discharged the same as loaded by a 12 inch hose. The tanks fitted on a ship are usually painted yellow and you will see the same tanks fitted in sea bases in different ports. If carrying for any length of time was usual to keep the tank fluffed by pressurizing the tank and moving the slides in the bottom of the tank to keep the cement moveable, this applied to other commodities as well. If anything of a small amount was left in tank after discharge the cement was brushed into the centre of the tank, the tank sealed and pressurised the remnants blown into the sea, making sureyou were steaming into the wind otherwise you would appear to look like one of HM s vessels. Oil Based mud when carrying such was in tanks intergral to the ship and had to be agitated all the time. Was more expensive than petrol and tanks had to be spotless on loading such. Cheers JWS

Surprising when you think about it the various uses for cement on a ship, apart from cement boxes was the cement wash mixed to coat drinking water tanks, probably why a lot of us either have cast iron stomachs or are suffering from stomach complaints today. The cement washing of cargo hold bilges. The blocking of scuppers when bunkering. The windlass spurling pipes on long sea passages. probably more I have forgotten about. Cheers JWS
