It is happening all around the globe, jobs going because of cheaper imports but onw must ask the question why?

Is it that the west has become soft used to a very high level of living brought about by high wages. Wages here in OZ are high compared with UK and much of EU and USA. Add to that some ridiculous penalty rates such as double time and a half for Easter Sunday and Monday and an additional 30% for the employer to find to cover costs such as super etc. No country can hope to compete with countries such as China and India. Both countries though have the largest number of millionaires and billionaires.

More jobs will go unless something is done to bring either the west into line with the east of the other way around. Until then it will not get any better.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Lads, As Evan says it effects the whole community, Not just British steel just as Liverpool relied on the docks Port Talbot and surrounding areas depend on Tata steel, But it should have been bailed out or get a bale out from government, Think of all the little spin off company's that will go under. The government are there to bale out the banks when the need arises, It seems to me to be the case of if it doesn't affect the Capital or home counties sod them. Parliament has been recalled to discuss this and they should help out. You cant after Redca going just brush this off as a global problem, This is peoples lively hood and well being you cant play god because you have messed up and ignored the problem, This is a very sad time for wales indeed for heavens sake show a bit of morality and compassion and wake up and smell the coffee this is peoples lives at stake here. Baffled Terry.

Terry, Caught a bit of the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 this morning. He was interviewing someone about the steel crisis and why has the EU not acted like America. America has placed a 266% import tax on Chinese steel. The EU has done nothing.
His reply was quite astounding the EU doesn't want to act, as pressure is being brought to bear by European Carmakers, who are using the steel to make the cars cheaper.
The UK Government also cannot reduce energy charges to the steelmakers, cannot do it without EU permission.
    Who Governs us?

    Vic

Report from China: "The Economist" March 19th, 2016

In February the labor minister, Yin Weimin, said that 1.3 million coal workers and 500,000 steel workers could lose their jobs over the next five years...Other estimates say 3million-5million people may be thrown out of work in these industries as well as aluminium production and glassmaking...Labour unrest is rising everywhere. Many firms are reacting to financial distress by paying wages late or not at all...In early February there were over 1000 strikes and protests, 90% of them relate to non-payment of wages.

China's economy has been in a slowdown for almost a year, this has caused a massive over production of steel as people have not been buying cars, but the state run steel companies have used the ostrich school of management system, thus a back log of steel, coal to smelt it etc. etc.. This has led to dumping steel on the worlds market. There is no way I can see that the government could bail out Tata Steel or nationalize it, there is a massive overproduction of Steel.

"The Economist" is a leading weekly magazine and well respected throughout the world. It is British, and has been continuously published since September, 1830. Therefore is no "rag."

Reliable financial papers report similar findings.

Britain, Needs its own steel making plant and is a market that has always fluctuated in price, If Tata is to close and we get out of Europe, We need to have our steel plant for building Military hard wear, Cars, ETC....If our steel industry is to get cut loose...................Where are the skills to come from in future reference its similar to the petition on the site now regarding British ships being manned by B.O.T. Standard seaman. The British steel worker has been let down by both the E.U. Other 27 members who don.t want our steel industry and the lack of push from U.K. Ministers for not fighting for stabilizing global steel prices as the U.S.A done we have gone from over 350,000 steel workers in the 70s to about 30,000 today. The industry itself has been warning governments for years in the U.K This was inevitable sadly its always fell on deaf ears. What function exactly do U.K. E.U.M.P.s have in Britain. We might just as well not have them, They are riding the gravy train, A train Britain might as well alight on the 23rd of May this year and go it alone at least nationalize the steel industry in Port Talbot short term and give it a chance. Terry.

    Just an observation.
    Respect your facts and figures.
Though am very alarmed ,At the Huge amounts of Money the Chinese are able to spend here in Oz. which is encouraged by the Govts.here,Local State and Federal.
The enormous High -rise Buildings, going up ,just in this area. From Brisbane ,down to the N.S.W. Border .hundreds of Cranes, active ,in Brisbane ,alone.
Country -wide. They have purchased A very important ,water ,source, described as "Bigger than Sydney Harbour" The Dairy industry ,is fast falling into their hands. As the Current ,Dairy-Farm ,and Cattle Station owners, are receiving ."Offers they can't Refuse."
In the Short Term ,the aforesaid various Govts, are happy to allow this. As it Makes their Books look good .I suppose.

    Hi All.
It appears that John wants us to live like Indians or Africans, destitute and penny less, despite all the struggles and suffering of our forefather's to lift our standards, even in all probability some of his own. Is he volunteering to give all his savings away that he no doubt earned along with some double time.
    Cheers Des

No Des, but if we continue on the current path we will evetualy go broke. We are finding it hader to cope with oveseas markets and it will get worse.
The big dairy farm in Tassie was sold for two reasons, younger generation no longer interested in farming, farm needed a great deal of money spent on it to bring it up to standard.
Chinese money will do that, create more work for locals who in turn will pay income tax and GST which goes to assist the economy.

We are the only nation in the western world that pays penalty rates and overtime at the rate we do. How much longer can we go on like this, something has to give.

Example, medical practices are in dire need of more money. Nurses from agencies only want to work weekends to get the penalty rates. Cost for one nurse at weekend, the same as a normal five day week cost.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

    Re 40.
The Tassie one ,is only one of many,John.

Don't Worry, they 'll make it Pay.
You and every householder, will find,it's only a matter of time, before they'll be in a position to manipulate the prices.
As it is ,most of the employees ,in The catering industry ,in this neck of the woods, are on Casual Rates. The Employers ,Hire and Fire,at will. And make sure
they get their ,Pound of flesh. And there's no shortage of Prospective, would -be Owners. Ah So!
