just more rain for a longer period round this area and round the hills than i have seen before jim.......a woman in york bought a new house last year built to beat any problems with water in the york area ....raised above any possible flood bysixsteps .....the water got into it .......the answer is spend billions on barriers or stop the rain....no good blaming anyone its nature and water the most powerful combination ......so bad JS is getting his old craft out the garage ......and is gathering animals two by two.....lol cappy

Not to worry the Chairman if the Enviromental Agency Sir Phillip Dilley, Part time job 2/3 days a week Salary £100,000. per anum is on Holiday in Barbados.

then if that is the case vic .....the river will flow faster..... and when it reaches the end of the five mile.... it will be a bigger and faster flood over any barriers natural or otherwise.....york has always since roman times been prone to flooding ...but the amount of rain over the last week or so is unprecedented.....also in cumbria vast rainfalls could it ...dare i say be the dreaded global warming ......regards cappy

Cappy, true it will make river run faster, the speed will also scour the bottom thus making the river self dredging. The river should be dredged along its length until it reaches the open sea.

I watch the River Wyre in Fleetwood getting shallower as it silts up, since they stopped dredging,
Behind my house was a deep water berth for big ships, now at full tide it is less than knee deep, I can walk across it.
The sand and silt coming down river is building up very fast. Just in the outer harbour there must be several million tons of silt where deep water used to be.. it is spreading across the width of the river to the North Bank as a big sand bar, only just up river the town of St, Michaels has been flooded twice now, The water cannot get out into the sea and is backing up, up stream and flooding, Just like putting a cork in a bottle, it cannot escape.
A perfect demonstration of the results of not dredging, Simple, any idiotic tree hugger could be convinced just by watching it. But they don't.

That person Sheen what ever he is supposed to be, should say if he is a TAX DODGER or not.
He lives in Los Angeles, and makes money in UK. I didn't see him in the line of people carrying Sand Bags. or offering to house the people who have lost EVERYTHING.
Actors live in a fantasy world, they do not have a clue about real life, every part of their lives are written by script writers, so have no conception of anything at all.
Maybe they should shove a sand bag into his mouth then he will know.

I have a friend who lives in Anglesey, she and her husband and dog were on their way back home from here. There has been no news about floods in Wales so when they arrived in North Wales on the A55, the roads were blocked by floods and fallen trees. A lady came out of her home and offered to take them in with another couple who were also stuck.
She said they got a lovely and clean bedroom for the night and a meal.
and Refused to take any payment.
So that just shows there are some real nice people around, who just want to help people in distress. Very Kind

if one or two metres don't work did 6 or 7 metres that will do the trick or like America they have run offs 30ft deep and 60ft across its just a case of flooding happening somewhere else not on their doorstep put men to work on it? jp

Hi shipmates, we are lucky in Cardiff the powers that be ?, have spent mega money on the barrage, river banks and sea defence ,so far so good ? but I am sure a couple of days ago, the Animals were walking two by two? or was it my single malt? have a happy new year , all my shipmates.
