Cammell Laird: Costa Classica model offers a salutory lesson - Liverpool Echo
I noticed that the LABOUR Government in this report of April 2001 gave an order of Four MOD Ferries to Germany.
so much for their caring for the workers and British Industry.
Brian.......................
The tragedy is that these difficulties threaten to drag down a healthy company with strong orders. Troubles compounded early this year when the government turned down Cammell Laird's bid with Maersk for a share of the £1bn Ministry of Defence ferry contract. The Birkenhead yard aimed to clinch at least four of the six ferries ordered by the MoD, but a rival bid won four of the vessels for Germany's Flensburger yard, with the remaining two placed at struggling Belfast yard Harland & Wolff.
The government's justification of 'commercial reasons' for a last minute switch of work across the Irish Sea was widely read as highly political.

It would be good if the actual wording and free trade agreements that exist with Europe at present was made plain to the British public without all this double talk, and innuendos, it appears to most people outside the sphere of influence of Europe that the UK is being taken for a ride. The press should make it their job to lay this out as an educational pamphlet as to what actually the UK is signed up to do and what not to do, instead of making a massive deal about Greece being in Debt, which I notice has suddenly disappeared out of the headlines, was this just another ploy to cover up the likes of Italy defaulting on its agreement with Cammel Lairds. There is more going on than meets the eye and most people get the decided impression that there is dirty work going on at the crossroads. There seems in the world today there is no such thing as the white hats and the black hats, they all wear a dirty grey. JS
#9... Cappy wasn't Arkley the one who had the corner shop in Open All Hours. One of the masters out of Runcimans took over the Railway Tavern in Haltwhistle. The wife has realations there and whenever there I used to pop in, however never did get my one on the house, he always seemed to be not there when I visited. JS
#27.... Believe there was someone from Haltwhistle posted on this site once. If so Mine Hosts name was Coaster. Think he was there for a few years but must be a long time dead now. First name Alf. Short for Alfred I think. JS
#8..Jim the name Charles rang a bell in the memory, and looking back in my original dis. book could be a Charles . Initials could be a badly scrawled V or IV. It was my last trip on the Hazelmoor in August 63, thereafter I was mate on the pennyworth one of Dalgliesh"s. At that time Runcimans was moving up to Glasgow and using Anchor Line offices and came thereafter I believe Runciman Shipping. If the same bloke left me cold as was not one of the regular Moor Line people, he left no impression whatsoever which is very unusual for me as can usually remember any quirks the writing apart from the dates which are stamped in are notrocious. Looks like North signing on and somewhere finishing with bury signing off. But the name Charles certainly rang a bell. Cheers JS
John it looks like a V which then curls onto the top of the C of Charles.
