    Default English and Proud.

I am English, I was born in England, and support England in sport.

I want an English parliament, the same as the Scottish parliament.

I want to celebrate Saint Georges Day like the Irish celebrate Saint Patrick's day.

I want to to preserve my English culture, like the Welsh preserve their language.

I simply want, what other people do for their own nations.

But I am told I must be British not English, and if I say I am English and proud, I am a Racist ? ......Why is this.?

Being called British in a way takes away my identity as I could also be Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish, Which I am not.

Three quarters of the world now speak English, are they all Racist for speaking it.????

When I have my Election and voting forms delivered it usually says I am British, but I always cross it out and put English, next time I'ii put English And Proud.

    Fred.

    WE WANT OUR ENGLAND BACK

Goodbye to my England, so long my old friend
Your days are numbered, being brought to an end
To be Scottish, Irish or Welsh that's fine
But don't say you're English, that's way out of line.

The French and the Germans may call themselves such
So may Norwegians, the Swedes and the Dutch
You can say you are Russian or maybe a Dane
But don't say you're English ever again.

At Broadcasting House the word is taboo
In Brussels it's scrapped, in Parliament too
Even schools are affected, staff do as they're told
They must not teach children about England of old.

Writers like Shakespeare, Milton and Shaw
The pupils don't learn about them anymore
How about Agincourt, Hastings , Arnhem or Mons ?
When England lost hosts of her very brave sons.

We are not Europeans, how can we be?
Europe is miles away over the sea
We're the English from England, let's all be proud
Stand up and be counted - Shout it out loud !

Let's tell our Government and Brussels too
We're proud of our heritage and the Red, White and Blue
Fly the flag of Saint George or the Union Jack
Let the world know - WE WANT OUR ENGLAND BACK !!!!

Very nice poem and I mean it sincerely , however, I would suggest dropping J.B. Shaw....Born 26 July. Ireland. Won the Nobel–Prize as an Irish poet. Educated in Ireland; moved to London. He vehemently apposed Britain's entry and participation in WW ll and later in his life turned down a knighthood.

    Hi Rodney
on various sites on google, ,
    he is referred to ..........
    as an English Writer,
    an Irish Writer
    an Anglo Irish writer.
So I guess you can take your pick.
I didn't write the poem I think it was from the Norfolk Regiment site. Maybe they were half right.
    Cheers
    Brian

Not worried or concerned myself and have no intentions of winding anyone up on the subject / topic matter. Looking at something totally near different re: Falklands and thought the below may be of interest ? Keith.

"England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectuals are ashamed of their own nationality. In left-wing circles it is always felt that there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman and that it is a duty to snigger at every English institution." - George Orwell.

This sounds quite like some left wingers today that are not very supportive of the Falkland islanders' right to self-determination, yet maintain the need for democracy and human rights for more or less anyone else.

#2, Hi Keith, I like it. But dare I say it, I'm probably the only one on this site actually living it.

#6... The Scots and the Welsh dont have any prohibitions on promoting their countries. The likes of the song " A Scottish Soldier" always brings a tear to my eye. There are many others, and the UK should have no regrets on its glorious past. Of course there was wrongdoing there always is, but they were the country who mostly advanced the welfare of other nations and to a certain extent brought them out of the dark ages. The world was a better place when the sun never set on the British Empire. This can be seen on how many are now trying to get back in under the Union Jack, after failing dismally on providing for themselves. JS

A letter in todays paper from a Lady and titled "Defining an Australian", shows the patriotism of the majority of Australians today.
Just being born in Australia doesn't necessarily make you Australian.
    1. If your heart swells to the strains of Waltzing Matilda.
    2. If you are passionate about the Wallabies, Socceroos,Matildas, The Australian Cricket Teams etc. bringing home "The Cup".
    3. If you love hitting the waves, regardless of sharks.
    4. If you enjoy having a beer around a barbie with your mates.
    5. If you know who Dame Nellie Melba and Phar Lap were.
    6. If you have a flutter on the Melbourne Cup.
    7. If you get a lump in the throat at the raising of the Australian Flag.
    8. If you know the meaning of " Dinki-Di"
    9. If you love and respect our indigenous people and their culture.
10.And most importantly, if you would lay down your life for this country like many thousands before you.....You may call yourself Australian.
It doesnt matter one iota whether you were born in Timbuctoo or Townsville or if you speak English, Urdu or French, if you praise Allah, Buddha or Christ. If you can give the affirmative to even a few of the 10 points you are on your way. If you can give the nod to all of them, you are true blue. All we ask is you embrace the love we have for our country and the values our young men and women died for. Name supplied....... JS

Here in lies the problem. You can be British and speak English but you cannot be English and speak British. You can be British if you come from Britain and you can speak English, But if you were born in England you are British and will speak English.
You can be born in Wales and be Welsh, speak Welsh and English and at times be considered to be part of Great Britain but you are not British
Like wise for the Scottish, you are Scottish by birth and speak form of Gaelic but you are not English be though Scotland I part of the British Isles.
Then we have the Irish who in the North are part of the British Isles and who can travel on a British passport but are not English or British and speak a language most cannot understand, they can also be either RC or C of E.
But if you go to Germany you may be called an Englander but you will speak English still.
Then of course here in Oz the greatest compliment you can get as a British person is to be called a pommy bastard.

    Quite simple really.
