On the contrary John, the EU is now considering the re-introduction of passports for all EU citizens as they travel from country to country within the EU. At the current time those living within mainland EU have only to carry a means of identification within the EU, British of course need their passport to leave the UK to enter (and re-enter the UK) the mainland EU, but once within can travel freely within the EUQuote:
