Do not have information on Sarawak.
This post is only to say thank you to Doc, Marian and Hugh. In these days of ignorant, bad mannered people it is great to see there are still some out there who will go out of their way to help others.

Hi Albert & Doc, Spoke to Sandra [historian] at Inverclyde library today, have given her all the details so hopefully she will locate the newspapers mentioned.

Was thinking if any members here live in Nova Scotia perhaps they could also check their local library
for newspaper archives. 13th dec 1872 or thereabouts, "Sarawak" Hugh Jeffreys AB, b Belfast,1833-1872 Ship was built 1857.

    Hi Marion
I do not think? this is the Hugh Jeffreys we where looking for as my cousin said he was born in 1833 in Antrim Ireland, and lived in Liverpool and sailed from there,
As I said in my first post the info was very sketchy as i am getting it third hand, we do appreciate all that you are doing and have to look at anything that is remotely like it might be him. I am waiting for some more info to come from my cousins in UK and USA to try and tie it down, again many thanks for all your efforts

#18, Hi Albert, dont worry, the only Hugh I'm concentrating on is yours from Belfast, Co.
Antrim. The ships I listed Ionia and the Virginia both left from Liverpool. Wondering though where your relative sourced the date of Hugh's death? As you have read the Captain of Hugh's ship was buried in Nova Scotia.

That's the correct one Marian. She was Liverpool registry in 1860 and then back to St John N.B in 1870 where she remained until lost in 1872.
The surname Leask is popular in the Shetland and Orkney Islands. The information on the grave in Canada for Wm Leask will, I am sure, be a memorial as he was lost at sea.

Hugh Jeffrey's death is confirmed as stated in the Deaths at Sea Register - 13/12/1872 - ship SARAWAK.

    Regards
    Hugh
