Re: Communism
Rodders a question for you as I see the first shots are being fired in the 2016 presidential campaign.
I have read part of the USA constitution, the part bout the right to bare arms, I only wear short sleeve shirts and jumpers, just how many people actually carry a fire arm at all times and are there any who do not own on?

Watched question time on the ABC for ten minutes this afternoon. All the pollies were saying the same things they were saying the last time I watched three month ago. What a bunch of buffoons.

Re: Communism
Johno in Oz.
I can't say I know what percentage of people here bear arms. I do not own a gun, and don't want to, or intend to, neither does my wife.
I have two friends who do have a license to carry arms. One a retired SWAT officer. Two my buddy who has hunting guns, and just wanted to get a carry license. I do know acquaintances who carry a side arm in their car but I know of no one who has had to fire it.
When they talk about the large number who own a gun, it's usually a hunting gun, as there is plenty of game here in South Carolina, deer, turkeys, dove, etc.. However, I only have one friend who actually hunts. The rest just happen to like guns, much as I like fishing. I have fly rods, spinning rods, light rods, heavy rods, and rods for deep sea and you name it. I even have two beach rods I brought back from Oz. with special flip reel. Now I just love to fly fish...but I like my collection of rods. Most gun owners are the same, they just like guns.
The only place I've seen anyone carrying a side-arm was twice in Arizona and two "cowboys" in Colorado, and they were the guides who led the way when I went on a horse riding and fly fishing vacation in the Rockies. But not a shot was fired, and you must remember there's some nasty critters about, bear, rattle snakes, etc..
In the fifty odd years I've lived in the states I have never heard a shot fired in anger, know of only one injury, unfortunately fatal. An employees brother was shot while working at a service station by a hold-up man.
Cheers, Rodney

Re: Communism
Never mind the Malcolm Frasers and his likes of the world, a letter in todays paper should stand as what a true statesman and patriot of his country stands for.......Heading... Why Lee was a winner.. Lee Kuan Yew once said to the world ; if you don't like Singapore"s laws, then don't come here.
Quite right too; Lets face it, if you had the choice between living a comfortable life in virtually crime-free but " repressed" Singapore or struggling in a low socio-economic suburb of Perth, where, if especially elderly, you were afraid to go to bed at night or worried about burglary or car theft, would you really choose Australia because its "the best country in the world"? I should point out that Singapore is also cheaper than Perth.
If someone like Mr. Lee in power meant that I might not be able to chew gum, but knew that I could walk down the street anywhere in complete safety, knew there was no corruption at any level of government or business, knew that I could leave my house and not have to set an alarm, and knew when I parked my car it would still be there when I returned, then I would welcome that person as head of government............................Signed My feelings also JS

Re: Communism
John, Perth is the most isolated capital city in the world and that has a lot to do with prices.
Talking with a taxi driver in Singapore a few weeks ago. He told me 60 were executed in 2014, 58 were rom oversea, only 2 local. Al guilty of either murder, rape or drug related charges. Tough maybe but it is one of the safest and certainly the cleanest countries you will find.

Re: Communism
I would agree that Singapore is the best country in the world.
Last year a Taxi driver told me that a 12 year old girl could walk through the city at 3 in the morning and NOT be attacked. Very safe. Obey the rules and life is easy.
My next door neighbour in Fleetwood live in Singapore for 12 months and then 12 months in Fleetwood. She is Singaporean he from Dudley. so they have the best of both worlds.
Brian.

Re: Communism
32% sounds about right to me Captain re. ownership of guns, but that still leaves 230 million who don't. Then if you back out the ones that have hunting not handguns the 32% becomes much less. Still there are a lot of stolen guns and non registered guns about unfortunately in the wrong hands. As I have repeatedly said the violence is mostly Black on Black Americans, and that is well documented. I am sure that you on your many visits to the states have never been in the neighborhoods that account for 90% of the violence, because I wouldn't go knowingly. Anyway the original question Johno in Oz asked was how many people had I seen carrying side arms and I told him four.
Welcome home, missed your posts. Cheers, Rodney

Re: Communism
Hi John.
Crime seems to have climbed over in Western Aus, when I first went to Freemantle back in 49 it was a lovely quiet place. I agree with you on Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew was a benevolent dictator, but boy was it good to walk down a street without being molested or have chewing gum stuck to your shoes. There was no display of weeping from our politicians when they executed drug runners like the mob we have now, makes you wonder if they are involved and worried of exposure, certainly someone very big in Aus behind the drugs.
Cheers Des

Re: Communism
If all the western countries took the stance of Singapore there would be very little terrorists or may of the drug problems we have. Bu mot of the west is weak and to busy playing politics to do anything about nit.
