Re: The world's getting hotter?
In 1890 there began toe collection of countries climate records. In 1948 a global system began. It was not until the 70's that NASA got involved, so to my mind most of this had been political. At the time of the industrial revolution, 1750, the global population was around 1 billion, it is now close to 8. There has also been a similar rise in the number of live stock bred for man to eat. Every mammal on this planet along with all rotting vegitation produces methane. So to some extent they are right when claiming that man is contributing to global warming, if such a thing exits.
Here in Oz things this year are not as hot yet as forecast. For Victoria to get extremely hot the Alice needs to record constant temps over 35, so far thishas not occured. There ahve only been 3 days over 40 there this summer period so far. the heat in the centre comes to Vic when the norh wind blows, so far this year we have had very little of that. A lot of easterly, which brings rain very heavy rain, and cold southerlies have been the norm since late November.
Some 263 million years ago a comet hit earth and brought with it a methane gas now only found in the stomachs of cows in India, maybe thta is why they are sacred? 10 million years later the dinosours appeared.

#10.... John equivilant to an eiderdown, but doubt there are any duck feathers in it. or could very nearly be the posh name for a donkeys breakfast if used it instead as a cover and not a mattress. Cheers JS
Re: The world's getting hotter?
Ivan, actualy you can get quite used to it, the cold can be down to -10c befor i put a heavy coat on (providing there is no wind), this is due to to the lack of moisture in the air, you cannot even make a snowball, to make a snowman you spray the snow with water. when it gets cold it gets really cold, the frost in the ground last year went down 9ft. broke a lot of the underground water pipes. my son was walking on lake Manitoba this past chistmas when he went through the ice, fortunatly he threw his arms to the side and didn`t go right under the ice, he got himself out and by the time he got back to the truck his clothes were frozen on him, they turned on the trucks heater to melt them before they got them off him, this all within a few minutes, he ended up alright but his legs were all cut up from the ice. just a thin piece of ice on a frozen lake. it was a lovely day, bright blue sky and no wind. the sun was shinning but no warmth in it, so will leave the bronzing until summer when tempretures can get up to 35-40c.

Re: The world's getting hotter?
Keith, just the thought of it makes me old bones shiver, I'm a tropical man myself will take as much as you throw at me. Was with a couple of Norskies recently in Cuba and they were chatting about -20 to -40c and sunbathing in it!, having trawlered off Northern Norway, I'll give that a miss as well, although the Norwegian Fjords are well worth a transit in any weather, preferably in the six months of daylight
Re: The world's getting hotter?
Ivan, we were in Cuba last year, had a good time but the weather was not the best, however loved seeing all the old cars from the 1940-50`s and found the people great. it may change when the U.S.A. allows their people to go down there.
I worked aboard P&O`s Arcadia back in the 1950`s (sounds a long time ago now), where we used to do the Norwegan/sweden/finland/denmark Cruises. fantastic some of the scenery up that way, nothing like here where it is all flat all the way up to our seaport of Churchill.
keep warm.

Re: The world's getting hotter?
I recall standing on the deck of the British Hawthorn in Lulea Sweden as the sea was freezing, all I was wearing was a short sleved shirt and pants. Such a dry cold you do not feel it for some time, but when you do, boy you can get a bit stiff.
Figures released here today by our BoM says Melbourne is experiening a very hot summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So far only 3 days above 30, average has been only 22.5 and night time has seen it down as low as 5. Have had the air conditioner on only twice to date so how thys can say it is hot beats me, have not had a day on the beach yet it has been so cool.
Re: The world's getting hotter?
Lulea used to e closed by ice in winter, and all the Swedish iron ore was shipped out of Narvik, Norway as although north of the arctic circle,it does not freeze, thanks to the gulf stream
