New years honours

here is the story of the Beatles MBEs......

.Earlier in the year, 75 teenagers from Pennsylvania had petitioned the Queen to have the Beatles knighted. While the timing was not yet right for that high of a Royal honour, Prime Minister Harold Wilson saw his way clear to submitting each of the Beatles' names for receiving the MBE, or Members of the Most Honourable Order of the British Empire, a prestigious annual award.
The Beatles arrived at Buckingham Palace on October 26th 1965 at 11am for the Royal ceremony in which they would receive medals from Queen Elizabeth II
John Lennon later sent his back as a protest against Britains involvement in the Biafran war.
They later admitted they smoked Dope in the Palace.

So not only Bliar but Wilson another bent PM did things like that.

That's right remember now Brian. Anyone with a criminal record would not be entertained for any award, this again is on paper. Some have lost their awards for criminal activities, didn't Gordon Richards lose something or was that another jockey? yet as far as I am aware the writer who sits in the House of Lords Geoffrey Archer still retains his seat. I may be wrong about him. Once again we come back to paper and what is written on it, there are laws and laws one for the rich as know they can get away with most things due to the influence they have either in government circles or through money, the ordinary man does not have these advantages if they can be called such. You cant tell me that half of these pop stars are not breaking the law every day even by the use of narcotics. Its not what you know once again its who you know. JS

Why is it that they still give out the BEM, British Empire Medal, when we no longer have an empire.

Fred , the BEM is not in the order although it still comes under that group. It is the British Empire Medal and falls outside the parameters of the Order. I believe, I would have to get the book out to give you a glossary on it but as have already started on a wee noggin might fall over getting it out , that is the book nothing else getting out. Have a happy new year the same as the rest, your sun in the west hasn't gone down yet, it is all hot and dark outside so will put more ice in the scotch. Buenos Notches JS

Re you post Jim, As a theatre buff Ms Smith has won many prestigious awards for film, theatre and TV here in the UK and America.....I'm a fan:) As to Ken Dodd another worthy contender...
in my opinion also. He too is excellent on stage and TV.
