I always remember stotty with big lumps of Cheese or hand carved ham with Pease Pudding , but battered Haddock melting lots of butter , I'll get the car out , but will I get there before closing time ? I presume Colemans is still on Ocean Road , but my favourite was n Redhead Avenue , they did not have the range that Colemans had but it was the best batter
yes colemans is still the biz he beat rick stien from padstow last year for fish and chips......the chippy inreadhead ave was freddie whitmores....while you werewaiting he would put a few chips on the counter.......a thingummy had it at one stage never went back isaid that fish stinks ...he said its fresh i said fresh from the dead sea and it closed later but i believe its open again

The holy grail of fish and chips, everything was almost perfect: the fish, the batter, the chips. You could buy them and then go sit on the dock and watch the fishing boats come in and land the fish.
There were several fish shops on the quayside; some were fresh fishmongers and some chip shops, and they were all pretty good, because the proprietors bought the fish directly off the boats. They knew which fishing crews would freeze the fish the right way: slowly, using flakes of ice, rather than by shoving them in a deep freeze and bursting all the fibres which give the fish its flavour and texture. Nothing went through a wholesaler, and nothing sat in a warehouse or a truck for ages.
They were all good (Jonty’s was a good alternative) but Kristians was the best.
If it was Freddie whitmores , I think the guy who owned it was an ex ships cook , and yes he put quite a few on the counter , just to keep you going , he also made his own curry sauce far better than the packet ones that most use now . I remember a chip shop on the Fish Quay in North Shields as being good , but the Northumberland arms nummed the brain when over there . There was a little cafe on the car park for the ferry too did a great breakfast when you missed the last ferry and did not have the taxi fare to get home via the tunnel . Just looked on Google Earth , where the cafe was is the Porthole pub North Shields and the fish dock has changed beyond my recognition , as as much of South shields
Historically , I always felt the best fish and chips I ever had was in Hull , near the dock gate , the fish was huge and perfectly cooked , and the chips out of this world , and I believe cooked in Beef fat
