Jim, it is the same old story as here in OZ, wages are too high. These people coming from Romania and other countries will work for half the pay as it will still be four times what they get in their own country.

In 1978, 1996 and 2013 Labor lost the election and on each occasion left a massive debt which the Libs had to clear up. When Rudd the dud came to office there was a surplus of $22 billion, now we have a debt that may take a generation to clear. Look around the globe and see the countries that have or had at the time of the Global Credit Squeeze of 2008 are or were socialist style gov, all are in serious financial straights and will remain so for some time to come.
Found a very interesting article on the net last night regarding the payment of redundancies to Holden workers. Detroit has reached a package deal that will see the workers get between $200,000 and $500,000 each.
Yes there will be some disruption to supply industries, those who do not or will not difersify. We as a nation cannot hope to compete with the rest of the world in the manufacturing of vehicles. There is not a big enough market for local made now that there is a good suply of overseas vehcles often better and cheaper than those made here.
Every country should concentrate on what they are good at, we are far moe productive as a mine and a farm than we ever will be as a manufacturing industry. With the emergence of the Asian century we shoul be positioning the nation to meet the needs of that area, not attempting to compete with them in areas we will never suceed in. Finance, insurance and the like are where our strengths and skill lie, it is there the future stands, not in the car manufacturing.
What happened to the guarentee from Holden that they would remain for another decade. The agreement Gillard told the parliament of back in March 2013, the one she negotiated with them?????
What about the cricket then John. Couldn't make the bats though no good willow trees. Cheers John Sabourn
Hi Shipmates, A local garage and property owner hired eastern european skilled workers, for his garage,at a much lower rate of pay, and put them into one of his propertys paying rent, every thing was great for a couple of months? then he found out they were takeing his cash jobs to they own garage,{ around the corner} and he was the mug buying the spare parts,it cost him over £17.000+ but he found them out, not before they cleaned out his property sold the lot T.V washing machine and every thing else, and on the bus back to eastern europe {scot free} they still owe him the rent money. The local workers are back on better wages with a bonus... he wont be doing that again.... They were very helpful/friendly to cash customers and spoke good english one was a blacksmith in his country.
In reply to Taff, Hello Taff, Yes i hope Tony Big Ears Abbott calls a double disalution , i hope he does because based on his popularity polls at present he would be swept from Office like a Sunami.
Every working class person knows now that any job is not safe, and his Contrived Money emergancy is simply there so he can sell off the rest of this country, all good liberals know this and there are many , especially those that have forgotten about their humble pasts and have deleted to realize that without a Working persons party you wouldnt have Medicare or a health system or a Pension of any kind what so ever.
Only lord Nelson with one arm would vote for a totally ignorant person such as Abbott the Rabbit who is set to dismantle the whole Industrial system of Australia.
BHP Billiton was sold under the same context thats why your Auto gas has gone up, nothing to do with the Arabs. reason i know why My best mate owns the Big Garage here.
You put thousands out of work your looking at a recession all in favour of the rich, Even the Salvation Army has been told to leave Manus island of the asylum seekers island.
Tony Abbott ex Catholic lay preacher and absolute dispiser of the Working class will go down in history as the most unpopular Prime minister of all times in this Country.
Perhaps humble beginnings in life take second place when not wearing the same shoes as the unemployed. Being sorry for someone who has lost their job is just not enough.
Maybe Tony Abbott should speak to these people at their Xmass closing down party we may well see some home truths instead of Political Rhetoric.
The mining Industry get 3 Billion dollars in Subsidies, the car industry only got One , so do you think Abbott will shut down the mines, no sir because Gina Reinhardt and Mr Forrest and clive Palmer are all on his puppet on a string list, i think Ive got it right simply because you only live once. No more poverty such as I suffered in British Orphanages prior to going to sea.
Why would you put thousands of People on the dole is it cheaper i think not.
Glen, it beggars belief that he was swept in with a substantial majority as was Rudd in in his 1st election. Blind Freddy could see what a Tom T he is just from his machinations in parliament over the years. Why did the party boot Turnbull out at least he is a businessman, maybe a fox but knows the commercial world? Do the voters not see or know or are they blind as well as deaf? They get what they vote for end of story. This is across the western world all the bellyaching in UK & France yet those governments too were voted in due to the general populace-voters despair-dislike of the party in power for whatever reason. Swings & roundabouts mate, imagine if Labor had stayed in power, what then? Politics are now days beyond laughable worse sad with their blatant dishonesty, lies & subterfuge etc.
Interesting commenst lads, but you need to put some fact in place. During the Hawke era senator Button came up with his plan for the motor manufacturing industry. Five companies cannot exist in Oz, Nissan, Mitsubishi went, then Ford announced it would leave. One common thread here, it all happened under a Labor gov and they never said a word. GMH announce they will go and all hell breaks looseThe fact is locals are not buying enough to make it sustainable, no exports as they only make right hand drive.
The only ones who want the Libs out are those still clining to the past, union people with outdated ideas. We now live in a global world and must take our place and trade accordingly. No business of any kind should be propped up by govs, business should make it alone, and if they cannot then they are most likely no good.
There is a push for Oz to be self sufficient, that is stop all imporst and do for ourslves. Good idea but one that would see hyperinfaltion. Imagine if we only grew food for us, no exports. The number of farmers would see such a glut of produce coming onto the market at below cost price. So many go bust and only the strong survive, before long there are only a few who now have a monopoly and charge what they like. Germany prior to WW2 when it required a barrow load of money to buy a loaf.
No we need to trade with other countries and if some companies then it is obvious they are not up to scratch. We no longer live on the sheeps back, Australians still have the attitude of 'she will be alright amte', well the time has come when it may not be alright unless attitudes change.
As to Rudd the dud, prior to the election in 2007 an ex South Australian MP said on ABC TV that he would do more damage tot he country than Whitlam! When he came to power there was a surplus of some $22 billion, now they leave us with over $50 billion in debt. All becaues he would not listen to his economic advisors who told him the projects, Pink Batts, School Halls, Cash hand outs was not the way to go.
Interesting fact that more businesses have been privatised under Labor than Libs. Quantas, Commonwealth Bank, BHP, and now that Quantas, a private company is in strife the ALP is demanding gov assistance for it. What a load of loosers the ALP has produced over the years.
But the tall poppy syndrome is alive and well here, anyone who does well is cut down by many. Gina, her father produced the weah, Clive Palmer, Twiggy Forrest, Lindsay Fox all began with nothing and built sucessful businesses employing thousands. Fox began with one truck and is now the second largest in the nation.
As for mining subsidies, I think not was it not the Rudd gov who introduced a tax on a tax as the super profits tax, a tax that to date had generated no money for the gov, how good is that. Did he not realise the mining companies can afford to employ the worlds best accountants, afr better than any the gov has, accountants who will find all LEGAL ways to avoid tax, that is legal, evasion is not.
Glenn, I may not agree with your comments but will defend your right to make them under freedom of speech, something thankfully no Oz gov has managed to quash.
