Pig and Whistle!

I am not sure now about the France now you mention it, it is near 50/60 years ago, I do know the Scotland had two one forard and one aft of midships for the catering lads on the working allyway, because we had a stiff on a stretcher taking it aft ready for burial at next morning, We called in there for a pint with the stiff. and the Queens were screaming `Get that out of here`
There were usually two on most of the ships, a forard one for the Sailors and Firemen and one around the midships off the working allyway for the Catering lads. big catering staffs in those days. so a lot of bar space needed.
Tho` we could drink in any.
The Media and Perthia only had one as they were smaller staffed. Carinthia had two and the old Franconia had two.
I was on the England and Britain but for only one trip each so didnt really find out. The Georgic had two.so I presume the Britannic also had two.

Brings to mind the very first time I went down to the Pig and Whistle,it was on the first Trip I made on the old Dunnottar Castle ,after work made my way there with a Guy a had made friends with.
Got really smashed on that Beer and ended up slashing my hand on a broken Beer Glass,
Woke up the next Morning with a bleedin sore hand wrapped in a bandage (found out later that the friend did that for me)and still had to go and serve Brekkie,hangover ,sore hand and all ! LOL!
After Brekkie I was sent to the Medic,who had to put four stiches in the Cut!
Still Today carry the Scar on my Right Hand!
But we were young and silly then ,never did me any harm though! Just went along with whatever!

Jim we had a canteen that sold beer for the troops and some of the crew use to buy some but it was no no for us boys

If I recall we had three pigs on the windsor one voyage. They were part of a parliamenatry committee going to Cape Town.

Ahhh! Hofbrauhuss and the Zillertal, what memories.
WE were in the Zillertal in Hamburg, teamed up with a bunch of guys of a Shell tanker that was in dry dock and entered into a drinking contest with the lads off a French Navy ship that was on a curtsey visit. If you got picked you went up and conducted the band and after your conducting stint you were presented with a huge stein of beer. Drink it all and it was free, fail to drink it and you had to buy the band a drink. Our table won so many free drinks that they refused to come near us again to ask any of us to conduct the band.
Eventually the whole lot of us got chucked out when we started making inappropriate gestures to the serving wenches with those huge sausages they served there.
Next one I visited was in Newcastle (its long gone) I was staying in the Merchant Navy Hotel whilst doing 2nd Mates and got invited to the staff Christmas do at the the Hofbrauhouse. Got absolutely smashed and actually won the silly walks completion. did not know how I had won as I had been going for a slash, crossed the dance floor and tripped over a matchstick left on the floor, did a forward roll, two somersaults with tuck, got up and carried onto the bogs. One my way back to the taqble the MC announced I had won the silly walks contest and gave me a free drinks voucher. absolutely out of my head by the time we got on the coach back to Shields. It was dropping people off at various points and I awoke with a start thinking that it was our stop, on exiting the bus all I heard was "next stop, shoreline". I was left standing on the pavement with no idea where I was, wandered around for a bit, found a park bench and fell asleep on it, only to be rudely awoken by a copper a short while later, demanding to know what I was doing there and where I lived. I explained that I had been drinking in Newcastle on a staff do and that I was staying at the Merchant Navy Hotel but had got off the coach at the wrong stop and was lost. He took me gently by the arm, led me to the roadside and pointed out a large building opposite saying "would I recognise it as the Merchant Navy Hotel" and to get my **** over there and sleep it off. (I had fallen asleep in the North Marine Park right opposite the hotel) Thanked him humbly, staggered in and passed out in my room.
Worst thing was that I was doing the Fire Couse and it was the last day when we did the full scale rescue exercise from the burning module. I cannot recommend it to anyone to do a fire escapee drill in thick smoke and heat, wearing a breathing apparatus whilst still half pissed and suffering the worst hangover ever.

Yes sitting around the aft hatch drinking & bull ...... on a tropical night wonderful. Never served on a ship with a P&W always trampers or a couple of FSNC a PL the latter a small version of the RN. The bridge thought it was RN (((: silly beggars!
