Re: New London Container Port
Hi Louis, Please accept my apologies for duplicating your post. As a part time poster, and only hearing it on the news this week I thought I was first with this one. But I do think from what I have read and heared this port will pinch much work from Southampton, Liverpool, Felixstowe, and because of it's position and it's amenities, it will take some work from our European neighbours also.

Re: New London Container Port
Perhaps this new port will take work away from existing container ports. I guess Felixstowe will be the worst loser, most likely followed by Southampton as both of these ports are serving the same area as this new port.
It always seemed to me that Southampton shot itself in its foot when the container revolution started. If I recall correctly the first container berth was owned by CY Tung and never worked one container in its first year as they were all on strike.
Southampton should have covered any and all spare land with container berths because it is the first port with deep water in both its approaches and harbour. It could have been the Europort of the U.K. because I am sure that, especially with the growth in ship size, why struggle up through Dover Straits when there could have been a deep water container port on the South coast of England. Just think of the prosperity a development to rival Europort would have generated for not only the Southampton area but the U.K. as a whole if only we had had people with vision and foresight and the will to drive such developments forward. Remember the vast majority of containers shipped in and out of Rotterdam go onto further feeder vessels for eventual transhipment to many parts of Europe and sea transport is still the cheapest means of transporting goods from one country to another in bulk.

Re: New London Container Port
Hi Shipmates,Our partners the Chinese will created many new jobs ? The mega city in London will become the biggest city outside of China. Hi happy john in oz wont they chop them down? The main City in on the thames 1st part ,of it room for plenty more, 250,000 people is only an estimate, will be double that, if it goes to plan the shopping complex will be mega, will employ over 1600 + mostly chinese. Hi George dont worry ,but you are right it will take much needed work from all the other ports.
