If the two girls involved had been a couple of Nigerian women or from some other impoverished third world country, I doubt it would have even made the inside pages of the worlds press. Because they are who they are, it becomes headlines. With much handwringing and sympathy from the world's media. In a lot of the world their sentence could be the death penalty. As the old saying goes "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime"
I for one do not believe the 'gang' story they put forward. They were willing drug mules think and lucky theye were not caught in Singapore or Indonesia, they have a special way of dealing with such people. It is very terminal and stops them from doing the same agin, the best way to deal with such persons.

when I was at sea I couldnt even bring in 20 cigarettes over the 200 allowance, done many times and my 200 conficated because I had a few ciggies left over from a voyage. Two bottles of Rum and shock horror , what a bad barsted I was. they were everywhere searching, no chance then.
I fly into this country from all over the world many times every year and have never ever been searched. Last time I was searched was in the 80s when I was at sea. The gates are wide open for smugglers.
They can even smuggle large things like People into this country and no one notices.
All Customs People should go to Spec Savers.

Never got stopped coming home i went through the red and told them what i had extra and asked if i needed to declare other stuff (knowing full well i did not need to )

Go round to the other side of the world and it was a different story turns out the ausie and kiwi cuzzy man had the operation and no longer had all his parts all humor had been removed after being asked do you have a police record "" why do you still need one "" was apparently the wrong answer my record stood at 5 cabin searches in 1 day 4 of them with the dog with at least 2 a day every day we were in port
As for the girls that got caught they probably went for the fast easy cash then came out with this story to get a lighter sentence even if the story is true would it be worth a bullet to the head trying to turn yourself in with a cop on the payroll of the drug lords we all know through our time away just how corrupt some of these places are

Walking through the red channel once , holding up the pumpman who had had a few drinks in flight as he had not had chance at sea , between tank cleans , loading and discharging , we both had extra , we stopped by the customs Watcher , and he looked up the Customs guy saw the discharge book in the pump man's hand and suggested we go somewhere called Whydontyoutwofircough , I have not got time to sort out two drunken seamen at this time of the morning , the pumpman asked if the hundred lighters and the thousand fags were alright , The customs guy pointed to the door , as the air hit and we looked for out onward coaches to the rail station the pumpman appeared sober again , and said well at least I gave him a chance . He had his second suitcase full of booze , lighters and fags , and he declared them , and there was no duty to pay , see honesty is the best policy , Hic ! Hic ! Never tried it myself . did not have the bottle ( just the fags )
Brian, I used to fly once a month in to London from HK on a 6am arrival plane. Often there was no one at immigration or customs you just walked out through the various areas & into the car then to your hotel. When we arrived recently in Paris CDG a gendarme at end of finger as you disembarked took a cursory look at the cover of your passport & waved you through, then in immigration two bored staff who waved us through. This caused a rather nasty confrontation at the border with Italy later on as my wife has Aus passport. Anyway no entry stamp well did the gendarmes carry on one even said "you can be banned from Shenzhen (?) for not having a stamp it is illegal to enter MY country without it." When we explained she went catatonic & called us "a cheat" not quite sure where that description came from. Never have we been checked or asked by customs about anything in our luggage, as you say now you could smuggle a person in (:
