To all of you who despair at useless utterings from Brussels :

The European parliament is shortly to discuss the raising of the speed limit for electric assisted bicycles from the present
    15 mph to 20 mph.
the Dutch government has already said that it will ignore any ruling to increase the speed but knowing how
UK politicians bow down to any waffle ex Brussels , looks like the Uk may shortly have the fastest bikers
    in Europe.

    Default Speed limits

If Brussels want something to debate let them debate LOWERING the spped that the electric mobility scooters go at. Some of them are as big as an armchair and are a positive hazard to most pedestrians.
As they are mostly driven either by OAP's or Overweight persons then the drivers profile will match those Euro M.P.'s debating this matter .

Have to agree with lowering the speed, 2-3 years ago, a mobility scooter knocked down and killed a holiday maker here on the Isle of Wight in Sandown. The disabled driver was prosecuted, and if i remember correctly was found guilty of careless driving. The old grey matter cannot recall the sentence given.. KT

Want to ban them from the road too, last week one coming at me head on, on the wrong side of the road, flying a Union Jack would you believe, when I tooted at him he gave me the victory sign, would have been hilarious if it had not been so dangerous. Must have been ex RAF, Keith.

Must remind you chaps that the subject in question concerns bicycles and not mobility scooters - two different things .

since starting to use a mobility scooter (4MPH) i have found pedestrians are very dangerous to themselves and others. if a family of three or more they use the whole of the pavement and are very reluctant to give way to scooters or even pushchairs. at car boot sales and in supermarkets they step backwards without looking, and give you a mouthful of abuse and murderous looks if they collide with you. we do not use them for fun, but necessity, or would you prefer that we stay indoors out of your way

Hello Alf, sorry to hear u need a disability scooter, personally i have had no problems with them, if my leg and back gets much worse i will need one. bearing in mind the hundreds of thousands there are you dont hear of many accidents with them, like all controlled vehicles there will be accidents, my complaint is with bicycles, one minute they are on the road then they decide to use the pavement, at speed, especially at a red trafficlight, so they dont have to stop, then turn left, or totally ignore traffic lights, so happy scootering mate, at least it gives u a life, Tony W.
