    Default Surface to Air missiles

0800 bbc news Sunday 29th. THe Government has just announced that it is seriously considering placing a SURFACE TO AIR MISSILE site on the roof of a block of flats in the area near to the Olympic Stadium. I am not a religious man, but what in the name of God is this country thinking of? MISSILES, ARMED POLICE, ARMED PATROL BOATS, THE ARMED FORCES, and THOUSANDS OF FOOT PATROL POLICE. What is going on---are we going to war? are we being invaded? NO!! it is simply a grossly expensive luxury sporting event that this country can ill afford.
Surface to Air missiles! consider this.. An innocent aircraft inadvertantly strays off course over London. BANG!! the aircraft is totally destroyed. WHERE DOES THE WRECKAGE GO TO? Is there a huge safety net to catch the pieces, or is it direcred to fall into the Thames! Any aircraft, large or small being blasted by a missile over London will certainly kill or maim hundreds of innocent people.Worst scenario, a plane loaded with explosives, or simply aimed at the stadium will kill thousands.. Are these Games actually worth the risk, never mind the expense. In these days of terrorism, there is only one thing to do---and that is to CANCEL THE OLYMPICS NOW BEFORE THIS GOES ANY FURTHER. Why should innocent people be subjected to horrific danger in their own city? ALL BECAUSE SOME PRAT WANTS TO SAY THAT BRITAIN HOSTED THE OLYMPICS!!!!! Let the terrorists think they've won, at least people in the London area should be able to sleep at night.

    Totally enraged,
    Colin.

i totally agree with you colin. why do we need the olympics in london?. what a total waste of money. this is another example of why we need referendums!. why is this country so sport orientated?. we are definatly headed the same way as the romans. are we going to have anothern great fire like the romans before their empire finally crashed. we are billions in debt and lend 10 billion to europe to try and stop the rot there and what will we have to show for the olympics?. billions more debt and a stadium that will only be used by a small minority.

Cancel the games and the Terrorists have won game set and match. The likes of Abu Hamza and Abu Qatada will be laughing their heads off and all the terrorists around the world will consider us a real soft touch.

That defeatist attitude is not what all our fellow seamen, military men and women and innocent civilians died for in both World Wars, they died so we could be free. We are not free if we cancel things just because its too dear to pay for security ( what a weak excuse ) or we are scared of the enemy. That's right THE ENEMY because that is who they are, just like the two world wars when the Germans bombed us and shot at us, these people are no different, they are still trying to kill us. We never gave in then, why should be give in now and be a country of cowards, no way, we would be letting all those that have died for this country down, letting them down very badly indeed.

For God sake, with the bravery shown by our profession during its history, I never thought I would see the likes of the remarks made on this thread, I am disgusted. We have to fight the enemy and not be a bunch of Namby Pamby's otherwise life is not worth living.

Nice to know in some ways that we have a few left and not sold the bulk to Libya and on ?

Stuff the Olympics, do not care a bit, now if this were a Rugby Union game at Twickers, different story.

Let us apply a Chess mind to all and go for Check Mate.

In sport most is about gaining or re-gaining territory.

In truth start here, they do not like it up them.

Well said John and that is where the olympics should be held. What an imposition put upon country's to build a stadium for a few weeks play when the money could be spent on a bells and whistles one in Athens and all participating country's pay a levee for its upkeep. How many bloody stadiums are there that are redundant around the world. As you pointed out it would also help Greece with its economy. No the reason for it to be done elsewhere is just so that the fat cats can grandstand and make more money out of the contracts while throwing up a substandard stadium.
That's the way the mop flops.

My thanks to Brian for this site.

Default Glasgow to Host 2008 Olympics:

Glasgow to Host 2008 Olympics ?

The item below, on Glasgow hosting the 2008 Olympics, has been circulating on the Net, so the original author is not known. Just as well...

In an attempt to influence the members of the international Olympic Committee on their choice of venue for the games the organisers of Glasgow's bid have drawn up an itinerary and schedule of events. A copy has been leaked and is reproduced below.

Opening Ceremony - The Olympic flame will be ignited by a petrol bomb thrown by a native of the city (preferably from the Easterhouse area), wearing the traditional costume of shell suit, baseball cap and balaclava mask. It will burn for the duration of the games in a large chip van situated on the roof of the stadium.

The Events - In previous Olympic games, Scotland's competitors have not been particularly successful. In order to redress the balance, some of the events have been altered slightly to the advantage of local athletes:

100 Metres Sprint- Competitors will have to hold a video recorder and microwave oven(one in each arm) and on the sound of the starting pistol, a police dog will be released from a cage 10 yards behind the athletes.

100 Metres Hurdle - As above but with added obstacles (ie. car bonnets, hedges, garden fences, walls etc.)

Hammer - Competitors may choose the type of hammer they wish to use (claw, sledge, etc) the winner will be the one who can cause the most grievous bodily harm to members of the public within the time allowed.

Fencing - Entrants will be asked to dispose of as much stolen silver and jewelry as possible in 5 minutes

Shooting - A strong challenge is expected from the local men in this event. The first target will be a moving police car, the next a post office van and then a Securicor wages vehicle.

Boxing - Entry to the boxing will be restricted to husband and wife teams, and will take place on a Friday night. The husband will be given 15 pints of Tennents lager while the wife will be told not to make him any tea when he gets home. The bout will then commence.

Cycling Time Trials - Competitors will break into the University bike sheds and take an expensive mountain bike owned by some mummy's boy from the country on his first trip away from home. All against the clock.

Cycling Pursuit- As above but the bike will belong to a visiting member of the Australian rugby team who will witness the theft.

Modern Pentathlon - Amended to include mugging, breaking and entering, flashing, joy-riding and arson.

The Marathon - A safe route has yet to be decided, but competitors will be issued with sharp sticks and bags with which to pick up litter on their way round the course.

Swimming - Competitors will be thrown off the Clyde Suspension Bridge. The first three survivors back will decide the medals.

Men's 50km Walk - Unfortunately this event will have to be cancelled as police cannot guarantee the safety of anyone walking the streets of Glasgow.

Closing Ceremony - Entertainment will include formation rave dancing by members of Glasgow Health in the Community anti-drug campaigners, synchronised rock throwing and music by the Govan Boys Band. The Olympic flame will be extinguished by someone dropping an old washing machine onto it form the top floor of the block of flats next to the stadium. The stadium will then be boarded up before the local athletes break into it and remove all the copper piping and the central heating boiler.

    Hi All.
I'm all for a permanent olympics in Athens with all countries chipping in for maintenance. If the money grubbers don't want that why the hell do they build these arenas in the centre of cities, surely the best bet would be out in the sticks with free buses, it would be much easier to police, and then the arenas could be used for keeping chickens.
    Cheers Des
