Something that has always annoyed me is the gesture of People when saying something,raising both Hands to their face height and making that funny 2 Fingers gesture (no not that one haha) by quickly bending and starightening the Fingers ,now i know waht its supposed to men,but why use it??:confused:

There used to be the story ont the manchester ship canal about the habit some "wags" had of shouting as the passed the sewage boats that went down the canal daily with their obvious cargo.The shout was "whats your cargo skipper".One of the skippers got fed up with this and started shouting back"whores,come and pick your sister out"
Dont know if its true but it was a good messroom story.

A phrase in common usage by Oz politicians "The truth of the matter is...". This is usually applied when some glib-tongued M.P. is seeking to further confuse the listener with a lengthy proposition of equally doubtful veracity ( i.e. bullsh-t).
Another speech habit I've noticed in recent years (which never fails to annoy me), adopted by some when attempting to describe something, is to end a sentence with the words "it was as hot as......." or "it was as big as.....", leaving the listener to draw their own comparison. "it was as big as....."? As big as WHAT?, for crying out loud. I have a theory that this is just another example of man's increasing laziness. The intention of this and future generations is to minimise the use of words so that eventually man/woman will be able to communicate by exerting as little energy as possible. This form of communication will not suit politicians, for obvious reasons (see the above paragraph), but the rest of us will become attuned to communicating by the simple use of a few well-chosen 'grunts' (ironically, a practise formerly discontinued at the end of the Stone Age). On the other hand, we may become more subtle and adopt a verbal application of the 'text message' to enhance our means of communication, as in OMG Roger IMHO that's OTT..pronounced " Oh Em Gee Roger Eye Em Aitch Oh that's Oh Tee Tee".:confused:
I'm afraid I have grave concerns for the future of the English language as we once knew it.:(

Another phrase that is used a lot nowadays and gets on my t-ts is "the elephant in the room". What's that suppose to mean?

And why, oh why is just about everything now an acronym??? Is there some reason we can't speak the words in their entirety? Does everything have to be shortened to an acronym?
Maybe they think they are at the zoo, or under the circus big top! Of course when politicaina say it we know they are talking about the parliament, bit like a circus me thinks.Quote:
