Re: A Colour Blind Sea Cadet.
What a great read. 10 mile journey into Burnley, I used to do that from Todmorden.
My life in the Merchant Navy also had a twist with eyesight.
I wanted to go on deck training like my elder brother but I failed the perception of depth so I took the option to go on the catering course at Gravesend NSTS.
On joining the admission officer asked “deck or catering” and I just stared at him and he said you look deck so I did the 3 month course, passing all the necessary exams but on the final day they said there had been a mistake and I should be catering 😢would you like to do a 16 week course or you could just go and blag it.
Being a northern lad it was a no brainier.
Off I went to the pool office to get a ship and blagged my way to a first class Assistant Steward on RMS Windsor Castle. I only managed 3 years but what a life and the memories.
