    Default Michael Lawrence

    Hi Michael.
I did one trip on the Lapwing as cabin boy.Swansea to Hamberg to Cliffe(Kent)Londonderry, and back to Swansea. We had a Cook/Steward,and I can remember going ashore with him and two big shopping
baskets to do the shopping for stores. If possible he would only shop at Cooperative Stores as they
gave dividend stampsone of his "perks" i suppose.

The Royal Daffodill and the Royal Sovereign etc belonged to the New Medway Steam Packet Co. which was acquired by GSNC in 1936, the year after they bought Moss Hutchison.

Royal Daffodll evacuated 7.461 troops from Dunkirk, more than any other vessel. She was damaged on her sixth trip, otherwise the total would have been more. Royal Sovereign also did six trips and landed 6,370.

    Cheers,

    Roy

    Dear Michael.
I also sailed on one of the G.S.N.C. ships, the Lapwing. The only thing
I remember, was going ashore every port, with huge shopping baskets
to purchase stores. The cook/steward like buying at Cooperative stores
    as got the dividend stamps.
    Keep in touch
