Thinking back they were called SLT's on ships. Think it stood for Ships letter Telegram. There are sparkies on this site so they will know. Was never cheap to send. Was a story went around that the sparkies also got a commission on this, maybe one of them will confirm/deny this. Cheers John Sabourn

    Default Telegrams.

Remember there were two different envelopes, one was I think called a greetings telegram which had the same colours of an airmail envelope round the edges,if you got one of those you knew not to panic. The other one was like a dirty yellow colour which invariably was the carrier of bad news.I remember when I was pantry boy on the Oregis,we were tied up in Port Talbot, the telegram boy came aboard with a telegram for me,it was in the yellow envelope,it knocked me for six everything going through my mind I had to go into the toilet and lock the door to open it.It was from my mother wishing me a merry christmas and a happy new year. That should've been in a greetings envelope.
    Regards.

I may still have that I must have a look and send it off.
