My first trip was on the Seniority out of Glasgow to Lidkoping on Lake Vanern in Sweden. Not a bad wee boat but I was a bit dissed when I got to Rothsey Dock to join her. Looked down at her from the dock and then across the Clyde at a Blue Star boat and a Manchester Liner. My first thought was “ Now that’s what had in mind” but no complaints, I got around Northern Europe on her for 4 months and then the inevitable deep-sea. Never looked back.

Here is another grainy film of Bob Roberts, one of the last sprit sail barge skippers, no engines, sail only. The Cambria was originally one of Everards and Bob was appointed skipper of her, he later bought her from Everards and ran her himself, the last of the old seamen. In his later years he lived on the Isle of Wight, and i have sat and listened to his stories in the Folly Inn on the river Medina, he also was well known for singing his sea shanties, he died some years ago aged 74, but an interesting life lead, kt
ps, the film is 40 min long
