I know the collective call sign for Ellerman and Bucknall was GZWB the Call sign for City of Durban was MQZZ ,this being one of three Twin Ships possibly may Jog the Memory? Here hoping!

She was a ecellent vessel with a good set of lads, came ashore ,worked as electrical marine electrical Designer ,1975 worked as marine elect manager in Durban ,

Capt on Exeter was Capt R Longstaff (deep sea) for most of above trips

Hi Alan, It is nice to see a post on this thread from a former" other" type of sparks from the "City of Exeter". You were a bit before my time but perhaps things did'nt change that much? I remember well the Electrician, arriving in the Radio Room at 5 o'clock in the morning, to collect the latest ships newspaper, to print for the passengers, copied by me from Portishead radio at an ungodly hour. Those really were the days. When I was the 2nd R/O aboard her the usual itinery was basicly, London to Capetown and all ports to Biera. had some really good runs ashore in Lorenco Marques Now we are stuck with a computer. Our days as a British merchant seaman long gone. Weeping into my G and T. Good fortune in your retirement. I retired 20 years ago.

OF FRIENDSHIP BUT HE DIED ABOUT THREE MONTHS AGO. NAME WAS DESMOND MURPHY, WOULD HAD BEEN SECOND RADIO OFFICER.HE ALSO SERVED ON A LIBERTY SHIP IN 1943, OUR COMMON GROUND.
