    G'Day John,
    I was only in one,the Darinian. Lisbon,Oporto run. I did a few trips in Her up till Oct,1965.
    Then the weather turned nasty so it was time to ship-out for the southern temperatures.
    I was AB on Her,and I remember a few names (all Papayanni men) Bosun-Billy Binns,ABs Johny Nibblock,
    Charlie Nutbrown and the 2nd Steward was Kenny Whitehead. She was a great little ship,but working
    watch on watch (4hrs on 4hrs off) and flaggons of wine in every cabin,I was turning Plonky:confused
    All the Best,ttfn.
    Peter.

    Default Ellerman Papayanni 50's - 60's

    Hello John.... I was an E.D.H. on the 'Mercian', from Feb. to May, 1960. on the run from London to Oporto (did about three trips). Eventually I had to pay-off before I suffered a total physical collapse or got sent off somewhere to get dried out . At sea, not only were we working 4 on and 4 off ( with dog watches), but were also expected to work overtime in off-duty periods during the day. I could, perhaps, have managed that, if only I'd been able to stay away from the plonk once we reached Oporto. Fat chance! As Peter so rightly said, the 'plonk' was plentiful and during the daytime we all seemed to be operating in an alcoholic daze or suffering a hang-over from the night before. Our nights were spent enjoying the dubious charms of the 'ladies' in the bars in nearby Lexioes. It didn't get much better when we got back to London with our cargo of wine, where we spent our free time in the pubs round the London Dock area (Leman St, etc.) My abiding memory of my time on the 'Mercian' is that I always felt so utterly exhausted, but we were young and foolish and besides, we were having too much fun weren't we?............cheers, Roger.

    ````hi ``all,
    I was on the Egyptian Aug-Sep 1958, the , Lancastrian May- July 1959 and the Andalusian Feb- April 1960.
    Didnt seem to be able to get away from them on an annual basis. I can still smell those raisins, and varied dry fruit now!!!. If my memory serves me right, did we have a choice of curry for breakfast? Anyway happy days
    Peter, that was a blast from the past. I sailed with Charlie Nutbrown in Blue Flu on the Neleus on the Aussie run in 1956 and then again on the Manchester Faith in 1962 on the Medi run and then on the Great Lakes. I sailed with him again on the European Trader of P&O Ferries in 1988, we got caught up in the P&O strike, all got the sack and I never saw Charlie again. I often wonder what happened to him.
    Alec.
    Default Charlie nutbrown
    Hi alex , charlie died about two years ago. I used to have a drink with him and a good shipmate named bobby hill. They sailed together for many years in p.s.n.c. Charlie being the bosun and bobby the chief cook, sadley bobby also passed away last year, two good lads who are sorely missed. Regards peter.
