I served as an Engineer on the Mercian in 1953/54. Anyone else from that era.

Hi Ken, I joined the 3,000 ton Sicilian in 1958, my first ship as junior radio officer. Lovely experience.
Note you are in Morecambe, oddly enough I am from Lancaster, old rivals in those days, dont get many seafarers
from there, except the Heysham -Belfast guys.
Remember my old Chief, Stan, saying to me , " when you have been at sea for 40 yrs , you will look back
on these Medi trips with Ellerman /Pappayani, and think you were in paradise." Liverpool-to an assortment of
medi ports, all ships derricks loading and unloading, always a beach party in Malta on a Sunday when
the locals didn't work. 6 week trips, Capt Goble, purple nosed, always on the juice, but never troubled anyone.
Yep , they were great trips, but in my 44 yrs at sea I really did have a few 'once in a lifetime voyages,' as did
most of us. The world's a big place. More later. cheers. Francis Ralph

Hi Francis we mainly did the Liverpool/Portugal run but did several runs into the medi but only on the north coast I suppose a beach party made up for Sundays at sea. In those days we used to run up the river Douro and anchor opposite the wine lodges and all cargo unloaded into barges. The river was very fast flowing and the fun was crossing the bar as depending on conditions it used to roll the ships side valves out of the water and you were left to vent the cooling system all good fun.
